new Delhi. The Patiala House Court on Friday issued a new death warrant for the accused in the Nirbhaya case. Accordingly, the four convicts will be hanged at 6 am on February 1. Earlier, President Ramnath Kovind rejected the mercy petition of Nirbhaya’s criminal Mukesh Kumar. The convict Mukesh sent the petition to the President on Tuesday evening. In this case, if the other convicts do not apply mercy petition, then after 14 days, the four misdemeanors can be hanged.

On 7 January, the Patiala House Court issued a death warrant to hang the four convicts in Tihar Jail at 7 am on 22 January. On this, the Delhi government had told the High Court that no convict could be hanged till the mercy petition was pending. Meanwhile, Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi expressed anguish over the delay in hanging the culprits. He said – My daughter’s death is constantly being played with.

Criminals have options

  1. According to the 837th point of the Delhi Prison Manual, if more than one convict in the same case has been sentenced to death and one of them appeals, then in this case the execution of all the convicts will be stayed until Till the appeal is not decided.
  2. In this way, if one of the remaining three convicts of Nirbhaya also pleads for mercy, then the execution will be postponed. If the other three convicts do not enter the mercy petition, then all four can be hanged after 14 days from today. The Supreme Court has set a time limit of 14 days for the convicts in such a situation that the convicts get to meet friends and relatives and to do the necessary work.

Mukesh was informed to reject mercy petition
The curative petition of two convicts Mukesh and Vinay was dismissed by the Supreme Court on 14 January. The convict Mukesh sent a mercy petition to the President on the same day, which the President rejected on Friday. Mukesh had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding the cancellation of the death warrant. The High Court had dismissed his petition and asked to file an application in the lower court. The convict filed a petition in the lower court, on which the judge sought a status report from the Tihar Jail Administration. Subsequently, the lawyer of the Tihar Jail Administration told the court that the information about the mercy plea was rejected by the accused Mukesh. Earlier, Pawan’s lawyer had informed the court that he has appealed in the Supreme Court after Pawan’s plea to become a minor at the time of gang rape with Nirbhaya was rejected by the High Court.

Convicted Vinay tried to die in jail
Despite strict security and surveillance of CCTV cameras, Nirbhaya convict Vinay Sharma tried to lay down his life in Tihar Jail. Jail sources and Vinay’s lawyer AP Singh claimed that the incident took place on Wednesday morning. The security personnel saved him in time. However, Director General of Prisons Sandeep Goyal has denied any such incident.
