Wipro working to restore live availability of NRC data, may take 2-3 days
As the disappearance of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) data from the official website sparked panic, the NRC office confirmed that service provider Wipro Ltd was working to make the data live soon.
NRC state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma confirmed that the data has gone offline, but refuted the allegation of any “malafide” intent in it.
“Once Wipro makes the data live, it will be available for public. We hope people will be able to access it in the next 2-3 days,” Sarma told PTI.
The cloud service for the huge set of data was provided by IT firm Wipro. The contract of the Bengaluru-headquartered company expired in October and was not renewed. Wipro suspended the data, which then went offline from 15 December, Sarma said
He said the state coordination committee had decided to complete the necessary formalities for renewing the contract in its 30 January meeting and wrote to Wipro during the first week of this month.
Quick on the heels of reports of data on the NRC disappearing from the official website and the cloud surfaced, the Union home ministry on Wednesday clarified that the matter was purely a technical glitch.
The Centre’s clarification comes months after the mammoth NRC exercise was concluded in Assam, which excluded 19 lakh people from the final list of citizens.
“The NRC data is safe. Some technical issues are in visibility on cloud. These are being resolved soon,” a home ministry spokesperson said.
The absence of the data had sparked panic among those excluded since the rejection certificates were yet to be issued. This would have further facilitated these cases going to the foreigners tribunals for decision on their appeals for citizenship.
