Selena Gomez has admitted that she has grown insecure as a result of her fluctuating weight.

The actress and singer, 28, has been battling lupus – a chronic autoimmune disease – since 2013.

As a result of suffering from the disease, she underwent a kidney transplant in the summer of 2017.

The former Disney star has to manage her lupus symptoms – that can include swelling in the joints, muscle pain, fever, chest pain, hair loss, mouth/nasal ulcers, facial rashes and extreme fatigue – with different medications, which have side effects – including weight gain.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan magazine, as she prepares to release her own make-up brand, the Wolves hitmaker explained that she has had to change her mindset in relation to her image, following her tragic diagnosis.

“I’ve gotten insecure. I also have lupus so I fluctuate in my weight a lot, so I’ve had to learn pretty early to have thick skin when it comes to this stuff and to understand that it doesn’t matter at all. It’s just hateful. It’s all it is,” she bravely told.

Selena says that this is why she wanted to ensure her new line of cosmetics was more of a “community” than just a brand.

She added: “So I wanted to find a way to make this brand into a community – into a lifestyle that’s beyond make-up and showing you how to apply it.”

She continued: “It’s about talking about makeup and the relationship you have [with it].

“I don’t want this to be about me. I know obviously it’s created by me, but I would be more proud to see the mission we have behind it as well as enjoy it.”

Selena was forced to step away from the spotlight in late 2013 in order to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lupus.

Two years after her diagnosis her friend Francia Raisa donated her a kidney

The star admitted her fight with the condition had led to her spending two weeks at a treatment centre in January 2014.

She underwent the aggressive form of treatment, also used to kill cancer cells, to stomp out the symptoms of lupus.

Two years after her diagnosis her friend Francia Raisa donated her a kidney – which Selena revealed in an Instagram post following their surgery.
