HIGHLIGHTS
- Shreyas Iyer excited to take up captaincy challenge this season
- Iyer admits that this year is going to be different than the other seasons
- The Delhi Capitals skipper is more motivated to do it for the fans
It was mid way into the 2018 Indian Premier League season that a 23-year-old Shreyas Iyer was appointed as the captain of Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), replacing Gautam Gambhir. Since then, the youngster’s career has bloomed more than ever. As Team India were in a constant quest to find a suitable No.4 well before and throughout the 2019 World Cup, it was only after the ICC event that they finally fixated on Shreyas Iyer.
Iyer, who has now become a mainstay of India’s limited-overs setup, now has an assignment in the form of a challenge, placed in front of him. Despite the fact that Iyer has been captain of the Delhi side for two seasons now, the Mumbai batsman believes that the new season on the IPL is going to be a whole new challenge amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Iyer also attested that this season the players would be more motivated to give it their all for the fans.
“It’s certainly very very different from the last season but challenges excite me. And as a captain it is certainly going to be one of my most important assignments, just because of how different the setting is. It’s going to be a different IPL no doubt. And we will be without our fans in the stadium. But I think, that only makes us extra motivated to do this for them, the fans,” Iyer said, as seen on the video posted by the official twitter handle of the Indian Premier League.

The Delhi Capitals franchise have this time made sure that Iyer has enough experienced players around him to guide him. Along with head coach Ricky Ponting, Iyer would find help right in the team with the inclusions of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane. The 2020 edition of the marquee T20 league, which was originally supposed to begin on March 29 in India, will make a delayed return on September 19 in the UAE.
