Boy, two, is shot dead near Economy Inn in North Carolina as cops recover gun and launch homicide investigation

A two-year-old boy in North Carolina died of a gunshot wound on Saturday, sparking an investigation as homicide fatalities spike in the area.

On Saturday night, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed they were conducting a homicide investigation at the 5300 block of Reagan Drive in Charlotte. 

Around 10pm, authorities arrived to the Economy Inn to find a two-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound.

The small child was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and died.

Neither the child’s identity, nor the details of the incident have been revealed. 

A firearm was recovered with the help of a Canine Unit. Police have begun interviewing family members who were at the Economy Inn when the child was shot dead, WBTV reports.  

Detectives from the Homicide and Crimes Against Children Unit have joined the investigation. Police said they are not currently looking for any additional suspects. 

This is the second two-year-old boy in Charlotte to become a victim of gun violence in the last week after one child was seriously injured on Wednesday.

Police recovered a firearm with the help of the Canine Unit and interviewed family members who were present during the incident

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting assault with a deadly weapon and discovered a toddler with a gunshot wound on Camp Greene Street.

That child was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and Devonte Warrren, 25, was charged with failure to secure a firearm to protect a minor.

Beyond that, there were 70 homicides in Charlotte this year by the end of July. 

Officials said in a press conference that the rate of killings happening this year shows ‘no sign of letting up.’

‘There’s a two-year-old little boy who should still be with us and is not,’ said Butler.

‘If that doesn’t stir you to some level or awareness that there is far too much violence going on in this city, then I don’t know if there’s anything I, the police department or anybody in Charlotte can do to shake somebody of their apathy if they’re not already at a heightened level of awareness.’
