Bengaluru Woman Allegedly Forced Into Prostitution by In-Laws, Dies by Suicide

A 22-year-old woman in Karnataka’s Bidar district allegedly ended her life after enduring harassment and abuse from her husband’s family, who police say forced her into prostitution and subjected her to continuous mental trauma.

Allegations of Abuse and Exploitation

  • The woman has been identified as Anjanabai Shekhar Patil, a resident of Bhalki in Bidar district, Karnataka.
  • She was married in 2022 to Shekhar Patil, and the couple had an 11-month-old child at the time of the incident.
  • Anjanabai was found hanging at the family home in Om Colony, Basavakalyan.

According to her father’s statement to police, she faced daily mental and physical harassment by her in-laws, and was allegedly pressured into prostitution, which caused severe emotional distress.

Family’s Allegations and Police Action

  • Her father, Vijaykumar, alleged that his daughter was assaulted for refusing illicit relationships.
  • Following the complaint, police have registered a case related to the harassment and suicide.
  • Three individuals have been booked, including:
    • Shekhar Patil (her husband)
    • Two other family members
  • All three accused are currently in police custody, and an investigation is underway.

Context of Domestic Abuse and Suicide in the Region

Incidents of suicide linked to domestic harassment, coercion, and exploitation have previously been reported in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. These cases often highlight the challenges victims face under family pressure, exploitation, or blackmail.

The tragic death of Anjanabai has sparked concern among local residents and rights advocates, who say systemic support for victims of domestic abuse and exploitation must be strengthened to prevent such heartbreaking outcomes in the future.
