Rain in Delhi Leads to Waterlogging and Traffic Jams; More Showers Expected
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 12.9 mm of rain between 11:30 am and 5:30 pm on Monday. Lodi Road recorded 13.6 mm, Palam 10.5 mm, and Najafgarh 30 mm during the same period.
Sporadic rains in Delhi on Monday brought a welcome drop in temperatures but also caused traffic disruptions due to waterlogging in several parts of the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s main weather station, recorded 12.9 mm of rainfall between 11:30 am and 5:30 pm. Other parts of the city also saw significant rainfall, with Lodhi Road recording 13.6 mm, Palam 10.5 mm, and Najafgarh 30 mm.
The rainfall led to a decrease in the city’s maximum temperature, which settled at 31.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the seasonal norm. Humidity levels were high, reaching 97% by 5:30 pm.
The downpour caused traffic snarls, particularly on Rohtak Road, where waterlogging from Tikri Border to Peeragarhi created delays. The Delhi Police also reported traffic disruptions on MB Road from Khanpur to Hamdard and near Dwarka Sector 3/13 due to fallen trees and waterlogging.
The Public Works Department received ten complaints related to waterlogging, most of which were resolved quickly.
On a positive note, the air quality in Delhi improved, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded in the “satisfactory” category at 56, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
The IMD has forecast an overcast sky and light rain for Tuesday, with expected maximum and minimum temperatures around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
