Extraction Review: This Netflix movie shows nothing but sniper and assault rifle

This film seems helpless about the twist of the story and is full of action over dose. Director Sam Hargreave needs to take the strings of stunt director for his next films to show the right synergy between script and story as well as action.

Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Ghostbusters Reboot’ and ‘Thor’ series have seen a steady increase in his fan count due to his best roles so far. But unfortunately he has not been able to meet the scale of attraction of a star in the new Netflix action movie ‘Extraction’. Is it really Hemsworth’s acting mistake or is it responsible for the stunt directors of films like ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War’, who have directed the film.

In Extraction, Hemsworth plays the role of a man named ‘Tyler Rake’ who tries to save ‘Ovi’ (Rudraksh Jaiswal), the son of a drug mafia (Pankaj Tripathi). Ovi is kidnapped by the drug mafia of Dhaka, whose rake is called to Dhaka, Bangladesh, to free him from the clutches. Here, the drug mafia of Dhaka also helps the state there. On the other end from the Indian drug mafia, ‘Saju’ (Randeep Hooda) is also sent to Dhaka for Ovi’s safety. In the struggle to rescue Ovi, the story goes ahead and all the action scenes are filmed.

Like most action thrillers, Extraction does not get into the depth of the layers and characters of the plot. In the film, the characters play their part in small episodes, for example – someone attacks, someone retaliates, someone monitors and someone plans to attack. There is hardly any information about those gray shades characters and their world, such as – information about the drug industry, the nexus between the criminals of Dhaka and the state, the personal life of Tyler and his team. The film is completely silent on all these things.

Sometimes even the smallest things bring you into the circle of questions. For forty minutes in the extraction, Tyler Rakes and Ovi are seen dodging gunmen in Dhaka buildings. They enter from one apartment to another and listen to songs from Hindi films in the background. While entering their apartment, the song ‘Didi tera devar deewana’ is playing. When they pass from one floor for 10 seconds, the song ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Layana’ is heard from the other apartment. What are the chances that the songs of the most famous Hindi films of the 90s would be playing in Dhaka’s houses in recent times? Well, this is a part of the story which appeared to be very weak. Except in the film nothing more than gunpowder is seen. It seems that the PUBG mobile game is being filmed with the sniper and the help rifle.

However, 16 minutes of filming as a single shot at the level of adventure seems like stopping breath. When the police find Tyler and Ovi and they hide in the buildings of the city. During this time, Tyrel faces an AK-47 of a dozen policemen with his single shoot gun. Another sequence involves jumping from buildings and fighting Tyral and Saju between traffic and the moving road. The use of sniper and assault rifle in the climax battle definitely thrills.

At the level of cinematography, pan cameras and VFX have been used in film in a better way. In films like action thrillers, it becomes extremely important at such a level that the gap between reality and illusion is minimized. An attempt has been made to maintain this level in the film.

However, talking about the other specifics of the film, the dialogues of the film are very limited, which gives the convenience of an action film. Pankaj Tripathi appears only once in the film. Apart from this, the focus of the film is more on Chris Hemsworth and Randeep Hooda. Like a video game level, the film’s story moves forward. Just like a video game, the action increases in the film. With this, the game is over, that is, the film ends.

Part of the film has been shot in Mumbai and most part in Dhaka. Extraction is beyond any real film. Put simply, filming the myths of Ross comics or easy utopias like Wakanda in Jehen and filming on the streets of Dhaka and other parts of the city seems completely unrealistic.
