Jamia protests: Delhi Police fired in air in self defence, say sources

ontrary to the earlier claims by the police, an internal investigation into the violence at Mathura Road against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi on December 15 has revealed that the Delhi Police fired a few shots in the air, sources have said. The recent revelations are contrary to the Delhi Police’s earlier claims that not a single bullet was fired during the clashes between the protesters and the police.

In the probe, the Delhi Police has also admitted that the shots were fired in self-defence after the protesters went haywire and resorted to “vandalism and arson”.

The police have, however, maintained that nobody was shot when the anti-CAA protests turned violent. Delhi Police has clarified that the purported video that went viral, in which police personnel is seen firing with his pistol, is from the Mathura Road area, the probe has revealed.

They have asserted that the personnel, who was seen firing, may have done fired in the air only in self-defence. Police asserted that the fire-arm seems to have been taken out in self-defence. The incident was also entered in the daily diary of the cops.

The video is being investigated.

Several private and public vehicles were torched. The cops were allegedly stone pelted, following which they fired tear gas shells. Police later said that it had to enter the university to nab the violent protesters.

On December 15, several students and the police personnel sustained injuries in a clash, which broke out between protesters and cops during the demonstration.

The protest turned violent after the anti-CAA protesters, including Jamia Millia Islamia students, were stopped at Mathura Road in their march towards Parliament.
