Oscar Awards 2021: List of winners and best moments of the night

The Hollywood Film Academy held some 93 Oscar Awards very different from previous editions, forced by the coronavirus pandemic, but with a red carpet, a face-to-face audience and without masks. The top prize went to the favorite: Nomadland. The surprises came in the categories for Best Actor and Best Actress.

The prognoses were fulfilled: “Nomadland” was the Best Film at the 93 Academy Awards Oscars and Chloé Zhao, its director, became the second woman in history to win the statuette for Best Director and the first of color in achieve it . The surprises came at the main acting awards. Frances McDormand, star of “Nomadland”, won the Best Actress award , something that was not in many pools. And Anthony Hopkins took the gold statuette for Best Actor for his role in “The Father,” an accolade that seemed predestined for the late Chadwick Boseman in his last role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Interestingly, the night’s jackpot was not awarded last, as was tradition until now. The award to Hopkins, who was not in the room and did not give a speech of thanks, closed the ceremony in a cold and subdued way, in keeping with what the film industry has been the last 15 months .

And it is that the Oscars 2021 experienced a gala very different from previous years, held at Union Station , in downtown Los Angeles. Without an audience and with a very limited face-to-face audience: there were practically only the nominees and their companions, the presenters who were leaving to deliver awards, and the essential personnel necessary for the production. Just over 200 people in the main room, all after having passed a negative Covid test, as explained by Regina Kingin the introduction of the gala before delivering the first prizes. Of course, during the ceremony connections were made with other points, such as the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, where the Oscars have been held in recent years, and even with Seoul, London and other parts of the planet. The winners, by the way, had no time limit on their speeches .

At an Oscars with more women and people of color nominated than ever, King did not miss the occasion to demand social justice and racial equality. He did so by recalling the recent verdict in Minneapolis in the George Floyd murder trial . And he added: “As the mother of an African-American son, I know the fear that passes, and there is no fame or fortune that can change that.”

Several of the winners also made mention of the systemic racism suffered by the United States. Travon Free , who won the Best Short Award, gave a harsh speech on the number of deaths at the hands of police in the country, “an average of three a day.

The red carpet of these Oscars 2021 was shorter than ever, since only some television networks with broadcasting rights had access. The rest of the press covered these Oscars from home, through a special Zoom with more than 500 participants.

The show started much more sober than in previous editions, without musical performances and almost without prepared videos. If on the one hand it took away the glamor and, perhaps, it was more tedious, the truth is that it also expedited the delivery of statuettes. Among the first was the Best International Film, which this year is going to Denmark for “ Another Round “.

In the acting categories, the first winner was the British Daniel Kaluuya as a supporting actor for his role as the black panther Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Shortly after, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson became the first African-American women to win the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in history. The two won the award together with the Spanish Sergio López-Rivera for their work in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, a film produced by Netflix.

One of the “big” prizes of the night was awarded after the first hour. The Best Director statuette went, as expected, to Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland . ” The Chinese-born filmmaker became the second woman to win Best Direction in the history of the Oscars.

The Mexicans Jaime Baksht, Michellee Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés, responsible for the sound of “Sound of Metal”, took the award for Best Sound .

The Chilean Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibáñez, who aspired to the Oscar for Best Documentary with “El Agent Topo”, were not so lucky . But it was “My Octopus Teacher” , the hit of Netflix, who took the statuette in this category.

Korean Yuh-Jung Youn took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in “Minari.” The statuette was delivered by Brad Pitt, with whom Youn joked.

Tyler Perry received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his “generosity to those who are often overlooked and his commitment to social justice.”
