Starting this Monday, January 4, the recipients of the second stimulus check can verify the payment status by the online tool “Get My Payment” on the page of Internal Revenue Service (IRS), both in English and Spanish.
The tool was created as part of the distribution process for the first round of payments under the CARES law, and was recently reactivated by the agency.
1.What is it for?
By using the system, people will be able to confirm if the IRS has already sent them the so-called “Economic Impact Payment”, and by what means, either direct deposit or postal mail.
In the case in which the aid beneficiaries received the disbursement partially, the system will show you the most recent payment.
2. How is it used?
In order to process the request for information in Get My Payment, the user must provide their Social Security or ITIN information (Individual Taxpayer Number), as well as the date of birth, the residence address (only building number, name of the street and apartment number, and zip code).
3. How does the tool find your information?
Because payments are issued based on the information that the IRS already has on file, the user will not be able to add new route or account data for direct deposit and will not be able to request to receive their payment by prepaid debit card or “EIP Card” .
4. How many times is the service updated?
Payment status updates are not made more than once a day, usually overnight, so it is not necessary to submit your details more than once in a 24 hour period.
In some cases, the person may receive the “Payment Status” message without a payment date.
To avoid this, you should note that if you entered your bank information in Get My Payment any day until noon on Tuesday, your payment date must be available from the following Saturday in Get My Payment. If you entered your bank information after noon on Tuesday, your payment date should be available starting the Saturday after the next one in Get My Payment.
5. What does the “Payment status not available” message mean?
If you receive this message, whether or not you are eligible, it means that the IRS was unable to issue the payment, most likely due to lack of information on the person. In that case, you will have to claim the additional amount you are eligible for on your 2020 tax return as a “Refund Recovery Credit”.
