Death Toll Rises to 10 After Bangladesh Earthquake; Aftershocks Continue to Rattle the Region

A 5.7-magnitude quake near Dhaka killed at least 10 people, while new tremors spark fear and structural damage across Ashulia.

Powerful Quake Rocks Bangladesh; Casualties Mount

A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 magnitude struck Bangladesh on Friday, claiming the lives of at least 10 people, disaster management officials confirmed.

  • The quake’s epicentre was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi district, close to Dhaka.
  • Authorities reported “a few hundred” injuries in the aftermath.

Aftershocks Spark Fresh Panic

  • On the following day (Saturday), a 3.3-magnitude tremor hit the area around Ashulia, just north of Dhaka, according to the meteorological department.
  • Such aftershocks are common after major quakes, but for many residents, the continuing jolts have renewed fears of more damage.
  • One local, Shahnaj Parvin, said:
“I don’t feel safe yet … maybe we are next.”
  • In her area, cracks have appeared in dozens of houses. She recalled holding onto a tree when the tremor struck, only to return home to find her glassware shattered.

Government Response & Risk Assessment

  • Bangladesh has activated its emergency operations centre to coordinate relief efforts and assess structural damage across affected regions.
  • According to the Earthquake Observation & Research Centre, small tremors after a major quake are typical, but they say the country remains at risk due to its geological setting.
  • The government reiterated its earlier warnings: Bangladesh, with its dense population and vulnerable infrastructure, is seismically susceptible, and there’s a need for increased earthquake-preparedness.
