Frank Lampard has confirmed goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s transfer to Chelsea is done barring a medical.

The Blues boss confirmed on Tuesday: “Yes, Mendy is having a medical as we speak. Subject to that being okay then he will become our player.”

Chelsea have been strongly linked with the Rennes shot-stopper all summer after question marks were raised over Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa, who joined Chelsea in a world-record £71million transfer from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, was given a chance to prove himself to Lampard on Sunday.

The Chelsea boss named him between the sticks for the Blues’ Premier League clash with Liverpool, but Kepa once again made a costly mistake.

While trying to clear the ball, the Spaniard was closed down by Sadio Mane who dispossessed him before firing home Liverpool’s second.

After the match Lampard was critical of the blunder, saying Chelsea were well in the game prior to the red card and goalkeeping mistake.

“[It was a] big mistake,” Lampard told BBC Sport.

“Clear mistake and when you reflect on the half without the mistake and the penalty we draw the game 1-1. I’m actually happier in many ways than I was after Brighton on Monday.”

Kepa Arrizabalaga dropped a clanger against Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp meanwhile confirmed his side had targeted Kepa.

“I loved these situations that we had quite a lot that we chased the goalie,” said Klopp.

“Then, he was close in the first half to blocking him already and he just had to do it. I love it when we get the reward for these situations.”
