Arsenal transfer theory emerges after fans notice issue with squad numbers

Arsenal could be about to shake up their midfield, fans think, after spotting an issue with the squad numbers on the club website.

The Gunners have already enjoyed a busy transfer window, bringing in the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes and Willian, with goalkeeper Alex Runarsson joining them on Monday.

They have also made an unbeaten start to their 2020-21 Premier League campaign, winning games against Fulham and West Ham.

But there is still speculation about midfielders Mesut Ozil and Lucas Torreira as both are linked with moves away from north London.

Now a feature on the club’s official website has led to speculation that exits could be coming soon.

A drop-down menu lists the current roster of senior players in Mikel Arteta’s squad, breaking them down into different positions.

There are 10 players in the “Midfielder” list which includes Ozil and Torreira – but it also has academy graduate Emile Smith-Rowe.

But the 20-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Huddersfield, does not have a number next to his name.

This was soon shared on Reddit where the Gunners faithful believe this will soon be rectified for the Englishman.

“Waiting for #11 to get freed up,” one supporter said.

This is a reference to speculation Torreira, who currently wears that number, will be used as part of a deal with Atletico Madrid to bring Thomas Partey to the club.

Another suggested it could be Ozil that makes way, commenting: “They’re going to give him #10 when we dump Ozil.”

While a third added: “Well 10 and 11 will be available soon.”

And a fourth added: “New contract incoming in which he gloriously takes the number 10 off Ozil.”

With a fifth simply writing: “Big future at Arsenal.”

Another player that could also give up their number at Arsenal is Matteo Guendouzi, who has “handed in a transfer request”.
