Apple was rumored to announce an Apple Watch Series 6 and a new iPad Air Tuesday, but instead the world received news of the event that could unveil its next-gen iPhone.

The tech giant’s website shared a new post in its upcoming event section Tuesday that reads, ‘Join us from Apple Park. September 15, 2020, at 10am PDT.’

Although no context was included about the reason for the event, Apple typically reveals the latest smartphone around this time – previous years saw it happen on September 12.

Apple was rumored to have something great in-store for the public today and the hashtag ‘appleevent’ began trending on Twitter early Tuesday morning with thousands anticipating the big reveal.

Well-known leaker Jon Prosser said Apple was set to announce a new Apple Watch Series 6 and iPad Air Tuesday.

Other clues also revealed the same rumor – some countries had removed the Apple Watch Series 5 from the website or no stock was available for purchase.

However, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg had previously said not to get too excited about the announcement, as it may just be the date of the firm’s traditional iPhone unveiling event.

Gurman suggests all of the products will be showcased at one event, which has been the way of Apple for many years – and it seems the analyst was right.

However, it is not yet confirmed if the iPhone 12 will take center stage on September 15.

Other rumors circulating have suggested the firm is set to release four new iPhone 12 models, including a ‘Mini’ iPhone with a 5.4-inch screen.

All four new iPhone 12 models – Pro, Pro Max, standard model and ‘Mini’ – will support 5G, according to LetsGoDigital

The iPhone 12 Pro models are also expected to have other AR functions building on its Memoji avatar capability, which allows users to create animated versions of themselves from within the Messages app.

The round edges of the four iPhone 12 models will give way to more straight lines for a ‘whole new look’, while the phones could be getting even thinner.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max would be only 7.4mm, almost 10 per cent thinner than the 8.1mm-thick iPhone 11 Pro Max, LetsGoDigital reports.

Face ID, the facial recognition technology introduced with the iPhone X in 2017, will remain on the new models, meaning the Touch ID button will not be making a comeback with the iPhone 12.

Face ID will receive a hardware upgrade, however, so faces will be recognized even faster, the report says.

All the iPhone 12 models will be equipped with an A14 Bionic chip processor and come with OLED displays.

They will be offered in four colours – Silver, Space Grey, Midnight Green and a new ‘Navy Blue’.
