Who’s The Boss and Seinfeld star Marcus Smythe dies at 70 from brain cancer

Veteran soap star Marcus Smythe has died.

The actor, best known for his roles in Who’s The Boss and Seinfeld, lost his battle with brain cancer at the age of 70.

The star died on August 20, surrounded by his family at his home in Southern California.

His death was confirmed by an obituary in the Los Angeles Times.

Marcus starred in a string of shows throughout his busy career, including daytime dramas Guiding Light, Search For Tomorrow and Another World.

He also starred in Murphy Brown.

According to the newspaper, Marcus had been fighting brain cancer for three years.

Within his obituary, his family asked people to take the coronavirus pandemic seriously.

Marcus has died at age 70

They said: “The family wishes to reinforce to everyone that the pandemic is real and asks everyone to please wear a mask.”

His loved ones also asked fans to support charities or a “Democrat in the upcoming election”.

A memorial service for Marcus will be deferred to either an electronic ceremony or an in-person one held after the pandemic is over.

Marcus began his acting career in 1963, in soap opera General Hospital, in which he played Martin Ross.

He lost his battle with brain cancer

It was in the 1970s that his career really gained momentum, with him heading to Hollywood after earning a BA in theatre from Otterbein University and an MA from Ohio University.

Marcus landed guest starring roles on a string of TV shows, including Eight Is Enough and Joe & Valerie.

He won fame for his roles as Gordon Middleton in Guiding Light, Dane Taylor in Search For Tomorrow and Peter Love in Another World.

Marcus will also be recognised for his appearances on Newhart, Diagnosis Murder, Beverly Hills 90210, Chicago Hope, Mad About You and The Jamie Foxx Show.

His last acting role was in 2008 when he played Dean in TV series The Game, starring alongside Tia Mowry-Hardrict.

Marcus is survived by his wife Suzanne Goddard, his sons Harrison and Duncan, his brother Casey and his many nieces and nephews.
