Hatchett reportedly entered the store and asked the employee for a thermostat.

When the worker told him they did not have one and turned to walk away, Hatchett allegedly stabbed him multiple times, then ran out of the store.

Surveillance footage showed him running from the scene.

The worker was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and was said to be lucky to be alive after the assault.

Police were tipped off by members of the public immediately after the images captured on surveillance cameras were published by local media.

On Thursday, Hatchett appeared before Judge Julius Hunter for his arraignment.

Sgt Ray Mills told the judge that Hatchett greeted him with a smile at his home when they came to arrest him, and said that he had confessed to stabbing an employee there.

Mills said Hatchett told him he became furious after watching clips of police brutality on social media, and targeted the Auto Zone worker because he was white.

‘Mr Hatchett told me that he had been watching Facebook videos of police shootings in other parts of the country and that he felt the need to find a white male to kill,’ Mills testified, according to WRBL.

According to court records, Hatchett was free on bond after being charged just three days before the stabbing with criminal damage to property.

Six months ago he was arrested for two felonies including aggravated assault.

Judge Hunter ordered a mental health evaluation and declined to issue bond.

Hatchett’s case was sent up to Superior Court.
