Covid-19: Indian Railways suspends passenger train operations till 3rd May as PM extends lockdwon
“In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of COVID-19 Lockdown, it has been decided that all passenger train services on Indian Railways including premium trains, mail and express trains, passenger trains, suburban trains, Kolkata metro rail, Konkan railway etc shall continue to remain cancel till the 2400 hrs of 3rd May 2020,” the railway ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
New Delhi: The Indian Railways on Tuesday extended cancellation of all its passenger train services till 3rd May, as the nationwide lockdown on account of Covid-19 also saw an extension.
“In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of COVID-19 Lockdown, it has been decided that all passenger train services on Indian Railways including premium trains, mail and express trains, passenger trains, suburban trains, Kolkata metro rail, Konkan railway etc shall continue to remain cancel till the 2400 hrs of 3rd May 2020,” the railway ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the country earlier today, said that most State governments were in favour of extension of the nationwide lockdown which was earlier scheduled till April 14.
India has been under a nationwide lockdown since March 25. The number of positive Covid-19 cases in India breached the 10,000-mark on Tuesday, while the global count inched closer to two million.
“To ensure the essential supplies in various parts of the country, movement of goods and Parcel trains will continue,” the railway ministry said.
All counters for booking of rail journey tickets for reserved or unreserved travel at railway stations and outside railway station premises shall remain closed upto 2400 hrs of 3rd May 2020, the ministry said.
