Bapu Asaram asks for bail due to fear of Corona, Gujarat High Court dismisses plea
Ahmedabad. Asaram, who has been convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor, has received a setback from the Gujarat High Court. In view of the corona virus infection, Asaram petitioned for bail in the High Court. Asaram, who is serving a sentence in Jodhpur jail, along with other inmates in the jail, went on hunger strike for release.
Asaram had said in the petition in the High Court that if he stays in jail then he will be at risk of corona infection. In this case, he should be given bail. Asaram, 84, was arrested in October 2013. After this, after being convicted in another case of sexual abuse of a minor, he was jailed in Jodhpur jail.
In the petition, Asaram has said that he is more at risk of corona virus infection, citing his old age. His lawyer also said, since Asaram is older, he is more at risk. Therefore, he should be granted bail in a temporary manner. The lawyer also cited the Supreme Court directive, in which the court had asked the central and state governments to release the prisoners in jail. Asaram’s bail plea was opposed in the High Court. After listening to the state government, Justice Bela Trivedi dismissed Asaram’s bail plea for four months.
Please tell that BJP leader Subramanian Swamy also demanded the release of Asaram. He wrote on his Twitter account, that if the convicted prisoners are being released by the government, the wrongly convicted and 85-year-old Asaram Bapu should be released first.
