Saif Ali Khan interview/ I don’t know anything other than acting!
Saif Ali Khan never shied away from playing any kind of character, whether out of films or web series, hero or villain. If 2-3 years are left in the beginning of his career, he always experimented fearlessly in his films and characters. In the previous film ‘Tanaji: The Unsung Warrior’, Saif Ali Khan was in Udaybhan’s very strong negative role but with his very beautiful and excellent work, he lent such a glow in the role that the audience was stunned.
This character proved to be ‘larger than life’ for his career. Even before this, Saif Ali Khan, along with Ajay Devgan, has played the beautiful character of the lame Tyagi, a mind-blowing villain in ‘Omkara’. Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan’s on-screen chemistry has been very impressive. Now both will be seen together again in ‘Bunty or Babli 2’.
This is the story of today’s era of small town. It stars Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee as Shauhar-Biwi. Here are the highlights of the conversation with Saif Ali Khan: After a long time, how was the experience of working with Ajay Devgan in ‘Tanaji’? The character I played in it, never played that type before. There was a little drama in every scene of the film.
Especially my character had a different trick. He was a little crazy too. His manner of speaking was also completely different. Overall there was a lot of theatrical performance. I am not a theater actor, so I was feeling a little afraid to play it. The biggest danger was the character being overrun, but thank God that Om Raut (director of the film) took over and everything went well.
When your films do not do good business, then how much pressure do you feel on yourself? I definitely wonder why the film could not do well, but never let the pressure come on itself, instead of trying to calculate what was wrong with me personally. Sometimes I feel that the audience does not want to see me anymore but my compulsion is that ‘I don’t know anything other than acting’, so I get involved in my work again.
When accepting an offer, what is more important to you, the character or money? I have no shortage of money. Thank God that I feel completely safe in this matter, so money has never been on my priority. I never saw my work as a business. I have always given importance to different characters and work. Perhaps I am the only actor who has done the most dark script films. I just want to do different types of rolls.
In today’s era, cinema like Rajkumar Rao and Ayushman Khurana is very much liked by the audience. After all, why don’t you do that kind of movies? Neither I am doing films like Shah Rukh, Salman or Aamir nor am I interested in films like Akshay or Ajay Devgan. The kind of films I am doing are much closer to Rajkumar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana’s films. If there is a slight difference, it is only because I want to do my kind of cinema.
I wish that the audience could know me only from films like mine. I want to maintain a separate identity. How much better are you feeling as an actor than before? I am very enthusiastic for acting because I know that apart from this I will not be able to do anything else. When I wake up every morning, my effort is to do something better and new than the previous day.
I am getting good opportunities, but how much better I have been before, other people will be able to tell me more than this. Look at whoever is in the mood to do a biopic today. How do you like working in a biopic? I like to do a fictional character rather than a biopic. So usually I avoid biopic. Whenever I get a biopic offer, I get scared.
I think that I will not be able to play him as well as the well-known person whose character is being offered to me. Still, if given the opportunity, which historical person would prefer to biopic? Of course, I would like to play his character in my Abba film. When I was not born, he was making his debut at the time, it would be memorable for me to bring the things of that era to the silver screen.
It is often said that you started taking risks with the characters, upset with your image? An artist must take the risk. In the beginning of my career, I did not want the image of a chocolate hero was put on me, but I did not like that at all. So I felt that if I want to get rid of it, then I have to play all kinds of characters and I did the same.
The films for which I took a risk did not last much but I was successful. I cannot always be captured in any image, I always keep trying. In the kind of films that are being made today, has it been easier for an artist to take risks? I think this is a great time for films because the kind of films coming out are different than before.
Doing artistic work is a gift of God. I have always found it easy to do the kind of work I am doing. But you are taking a lot of risk in the commercial zone only? I am enjoying it so I am into acting and I just take the risk to the extent I can enjoy. My good luck is that I am also getting the characters of the same Caliber as I can afford. I don’t want to experiment much.
Do you think doing a film like ‘Kalakandi’ is like a mistake? It was a very dark film, but while doing it I also enjoyed myself a lot and learned a lot of new things as well. I learned a lot about acting while doing it. What would Chef like to say about the absence of films like ‘Lal Kaptan’ and ‘Kalakandi’? Films do not walk, no one is in the hands of one, but it is sure that the film that does not run is not according to the audience. ‘Chef’ was a good film but if there was a little more spice in it, then maybe the audience might have liked it.
The ‘Red Captain’ was also good but his flavor audience did not like it. The audience did not like to be your father in ‘Jawani Jaaneman’. Perhaps this was the reason for the film not running. What do you think about this? He was not a regular father role. However, I have no problem with that either because in real life I am the father of three children. In such a way, what kind of avoiding such characters. I don’t think this would have been the only reason for the film not running.
Nowadays, a lot is happening in the country that takes the form of controversy. Most of the people associated with the industry are seen to have their opinions on this, but you have kept silent on these issues? I am not much interested in social and political activity, so my views on this are also very less.
By the time I try to understand an issue, it is too late that everyone has some opinion on it. In such a situation, I feel that I should not repeat the opinion already presented by someone. In such a situation, I like to be quiet.
