The former chief minister can be seen sporting a full-grown beard in the picture. The identity of the person standing next to him in the picture is yet to be established.

Omar Abdullah was first shifted into detention on the intervening night of August 4-5 last year. He was put under house arrest under section 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973. His detention was extended in February of this year under the Public Safety Act (PSA), 1953.

On Monday, the J&K administration told the Supreme Court of India that the preventive detention of Omar Abdullah’s detention for over seven months is justified citing him a “threat to public order”. The court cannot review his detention, claimed the J&K administration.

The argument was made as a bench of SC Justices Arun Mishra and Indira Banerjee was hearing a plea filed by Omar Abdullah’s sister Sara Abdullah Pilot. In her plea, Sara Abdullah Pilot challenged her brother Omar’s detention. The response on behalf of the J&K administration was filed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Former J&K CMs Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were detained in August of last year along with other local political leaders. These detentions were sanctioned ahead of the introduction of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill that was passed in both houses of parliament in the first week of August.ADVERTISEMENT
