Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the ODI and Test series against New Zealand because of a calf injury. Rohit had suffered the injury during the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand on Sunday.
Rohit, who was standing in as captain after Virat Kohli was rested for the final match, retired hurt after scoring 60 before KL Rahul took charge on the field during New Zealand’s chase.
Mayank Agarwal, who made his ODI debut against the West Indies in December last year, has been named as Rohit’s replacement in the ODI squad. However, the Test squad for the New Zealand tour is yet to be announced.
Rohit Sharma becomes the second major India cricketer to be ruled out of the ODI series against the Black Caps. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit’s opening partner in limited-overs formats, is also missing from the squad which will play 3 matches against New Zealand starting February 5.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who had sealed his spot as Test opener thanks to some stunning performances at home, will also miss the 2 Tests against New Zealand later this month.
In the 5th T20I vs New Zealand that India won by 7 runs to whitewash the hosts 5-0, Rohit Sharma replaced Virat Kohli on a major world record list. While scoring a match-winning 60* off 41 balls, Rohit hit his 25th score of 50 or more in the shortest format, thus overtaking Kohli on the list of players with most 50+ scores in T20Is.
