He added that no country would receive special treatment.
Responding directly to a question on India, Rahman said Bangladesh values stable relations with neighbours. At the same time, cooperation must align with Bangladesh’s priorities.
He said trade, connectivity and regional stability remain important areas of cooperation.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader indicated that Dhaka will maintain balanced ties with regional powers. The aim is to work with multiple partners while protecting national interests.
He stressed that foreign policy decisions would remain independent and practical.
The statement came after the BNP secured a strong mandate in the parliamentary elections. Rahman is expected to play a major role in shaping the country’s future diplomatic direction.
Observers see the “Bangladesh comes first” line as a signal of a more interest-driven foreign policy.
