Indonesian airliner loses contact on domestic flight

Jakarta, January 9

A Sriwijaya Air passenger jet carrying 62 people lost contact with air traffic controllers after taking off from Indonesia’s capital on Saturday on a domestic flight, officials said.

Indonesian Transportation Ministry spokesperson Adita Irawati said the Boeing 737-500 took off from Jakarta at about 1:56 pm and lost contact with the control tower at 2:40 pm.

“The missing plane is currently under investigation and under coordination with the National Search and Rescue Agency and the National Transportation Safety Committee,” Irawati said in a statement.

A statement released by the airline said the plane was on an estimated 90-minute flight from Jakarta to Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province on Indonesia’s Borneo island. There were 56 passengers and six crew members onboard.

Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation, with more than 260 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents on land, sea and air because of overcrowding on ferries, aging infrastructure and poorly enforced safety standards. —  AP

Zoe Davison loses brave cancer battle on day of Plumpton double

Zoe Davison has lost her cancer battle on the day two of her horses raced to victory at Plumpton.

Brown Bullet and Mr Jack won for the East Grinstead-based trainer, who bravely fought the disease for four-and-a-half years.

Davison was diagnosed with breast cancer and her daughter, assistant trainer Gemma recently revealed it had become terminal.

A few hours after jockey James Best celebrated the emotional success on Brown Bullet in the 2m novice hurdle, followed by Mr Jack’s handicap triumph, the sad news came through that Davison, 60, had passed away in hospital.

Best told Sky Sports Racing: “What a lovely family they are. I was in there this morning and I’ve had an awful lot of rides for them over the past 18 months to two years but that was actually my first winner for Zoe.

Mr Jack won the Watch Today’s Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle at Plumpton

“What a tough lady she’s been the past four and a half years and you could probably see what it meant just to get a winner for the whole team.

“They work so hard and I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it’s been for Andy, Gemelle and the whole family and team around them at home.”

Davison’s first winner as an amateur jockey came at Plumpton in 1986.

At Towcester 11 years later, she was off the mark as a trainer.

Multiple winners for her at Shovelstrode Racing Stables have included Finnegans Garden, Nozic and Just Beware.

Her best season was in 2017-18 when she recorded 15 successes at National Hunt tracks.

Billie Eilish Loses 100k Fans On Instagram After Posting A Pencil Drawing Of Breasts

Billie Eilish’s reaction was priceless after the pop star lost thousands of followers on Instagram, after sharing intimate sketchbook drawings that she’s ‘really proud of.’

Billie Eilish‘s sketches may have been a bit too risqué for some people’s tastes. On Dec. 28, the singer hopped on the “post a picture of” Instagram bandwagon, in which followers can ask an account to post a picture of a certain memory/event/and so forth. Billie was asked to post “a drawing you’re really proud of,” which led her to share a page from her sketchbook — featuring a whole lot of breasts.

“These probably lol i love boobs,” Billie wrote over the pencil drawings, which showed various naked figures (one bounded in what looked like a snake). One keen fan noticed that Billie’s Instagram following seem to take a hit after sharing the drawings, although this could have been purely coincidental. “BYE NOT HER LOSING 100K CUZ OF BOOBS,” the Twitter fan wrote over two screenshots of Billie’s Instagram following, which went from 73 million to 72.9 million.

Billie even posted this observation on her own Instagram Story. “LMFAOOO y’all babies smh,” the “Therefore I Am” singer wrote over the tweet. Regardless of whether or not this drop in followers was caused by the sketchbook reveal, Billie’s Instagram following has since recovered: it returned to 73 million fans on Dec. 29.

Elsewhere on her Instagram Story, Billie shared a screenshot of her iPhone lock screen (also featuring breasts), her dogs, and Internet browsing history which revealed many hunky photos of Tom Hardy. One of these posts even showed the pop star in the music studio, which Billie shared six days after teasing new music to come.

On Dec. 22, Billie also took to her Instagram Story to react to people’s unsolicited opinions on her trademark hairstyle (neon green roots, which flow into dark hair). “Stop making fun of me…I’m f–king making you an album,” Billie said in the Instagram Story, laughing. She continued to tease, “I will not put it out if you keep making fun of my hair. Shut up.” Billie also has a new documentary arriving on Apple TV+ on Feb. 26, 2021, Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry; the trailer dropped on Dec. 15.

Apple loses early challenge in virtualization copyright claim

Apple has lost an early challenge in its lawsuit against Corellium, a security firm that offers a virtualized version of iOS for security testing. Ruling on a motion for summary judgment, the judge presiding over the case has dismissed Apple’s copyright infringement claim over Corellium’s software, finding that Corellium’s use of Apple code constituted fair use. The judge deferred ruling on a separate Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) charge, but the result is still a significant setback for the iPhone manufacturer’s legal case. The news was first reported by The Washington Post.

In particular, the judge found that additional features within Corellium’s tool strengthened its case for fair use, particularly the ability to modify the kernel or observe and halt processes.

“Corellium makes several changes to iOS and incorporates its own code to create a product that serves a transformative purpose,” the judge wrote in his ruling. “Hence, Corellium’s profit motivation does not undermine its fair use defense, particularly considering the public benefit of the product.”

Crucially, the court didn’t dismiss all of Apple’s case. Apple has alleged that Corellium circumvented its authentication server and secure boot chain, among other measures, violating the DMCA’s ban on circumventing copy protection measures. Corellium also mounted a fair use defense against the DMCA charges, but the judge did not find it compelling enough to dismiss the DMCA allegations before a full trial.

Apple began its lawsuit against Corellium on copyright grounds in August 2019, adding alleged DMCA violations to the case the following January. Throughout the case, Apple has insisted that its purpose is “not to encumber good-faith security research, but to bring an end to Corellium’s unlawful commercialization of Apple’s valuable copyrighted works.” Still, the lawsuit has been alarming to many security firms who rely on Corellium products for iOS analysis.

The Oracle v. Google case has cast a heavy shadow over the trial, and is referenced several times in the ruling as a preeminent example of successful copyright claim over software. However, the judge ultimately found the case had little bearing on the specific allegations made by Apple.

World’s largest free-floating iceberg loses a 70 square miles chunk from its northernmost section

Iceberg heading for South Georgia penguin colony loses 70-square-mile chunk after slamming into the continental shelf

  • Iceberg A68a is on a collision path with South Georgia island
  • NASA satellites captured an image showing it lost a large chunk along the way
  • The pieces is measures about 70 square miles and is set to be named

The massive free-floating iceberg that is dangerously approaching South Georgia island appears to have lost a large chunk along its path.

A NASA satellite capture an image of iceberg A68a, which shows its northernmost section is missing.

Scientists theorize the 70 square mile chunk was clipped off when the frozen structure hit the continental shelf outside of the island, ‘spawning a new berg,’ according to Gizmodo.

The newly formed piece will soon receive its own name, as the smaller iceberg is large enough for maritime agencies to observe its path.

The massive free-floating iceberg that is dangerously approaching South Georgia island appears to have lost a large chunk along its path. A NASA satellite capture an image of iceberg A68a, which shows its northernmost section is missing

Iceberg A68a, which measures 1,500-square-miles, broke from the Antarctic peninsula’s Larsen C ice shelf in July 2017 and headed slowly for the open ocean.

The current propelled the berg on a fast track through what scientists call ‘iceberg alley,’ a northeast route traveled by chunks of ice that break from the peninsula.

‘Normally we’d expect these icebergs to break apart in the open ocean with all the wave action and turbulence,’ said Geraint Tarling, a biological oceanographer with the British Antarctic Survey.

But not A68a.

It’s now headed straight for South Georgia Island, a British overseas territory in the southern Atlantic, where within days it could smash into the remote world teeming with wildlife.

The Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite (pictured) and NASA's MODIS satellite snapped images of the iceberg this week, revealing it has lost a huge chunk along its path of destruction

‘It is really, really close, less than 50 kilometers away,’ making a collision almost inevitable, Tarling told Reuters this week.

The Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite and NASA’s MODIS satellite snapped images of the iceberg this week, revealing it has lost a huge chunk along its path of destruction.

The images show the smaller iceberg sitting northwest above its parent berg.

Scientists tracking the berg’s progress via satellite warned that A68a — propelled by the powerful circumpolar current — could hit South Georgia within days.

A68a is a hazard for wildlife — having the potential to crush marine life on the island’s ocean shelf and make waters inhospitable as it melts to release freshwater.

The iceberg could also become wedged up against the island, blocking access to the water and causing an ‘apocalypse’ for penguins that need to feed their young.

The ocean around the island is also home to colonies of seals and whales, as well as some of the world’s most sustainable fisheries.

Ecologist Geraint Tarling of the British Antarctic Survey said: ”The iceberg is going to cause devastation to the sea floor by scouring the seabed communities of sponges, brittle stars, worms and sea-urchins.’

‘These communities help store large amounts of carbon in their body tissue and surrounding sediment,’ he explained.

‘Destruction by the iceberg will release this stored carbon back into the water and, potentially, the atmosphere, which would be a further negative impact.’

‘However, whilst we are interested in the effects of A68a’s new arrival at South Georgia, not all the impacts along its path are negative.’

‘For example, when travelling through the open ocean, icebergs shed enormous quantities of mineral dust that will fertilize the ocean plankton around them, and this will benefit them and cascade up the food chain.’

AOC loses out on prestigious committee role after secret ballot

AOC loses out on prestigious committee role after secret ballot of her fellow House Democrats after calling for ‘new leadership’ and feuding with Joe Manchin

  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lost a race for a seat on the prestigious House Energy and Commerce Committee
  • Democrats voted overwhelmingly for fellow New York Democrat, Rep. Kathleen Rice, in a secret ballot
  • Moderate Democrats openly criticized the progressive star on a video call, upset that she had backed some of their primary challengers

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lost a race for a seat on the prestigious House Energy and Commerce Committee, as colleagues through a secret ballot voted overwhelmingly for fellow New York Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice.

Politico reported Thursday that the two New York Democrats were forced to fight over a final seat on the committee, which oversees big policy areas like climate change and healthcare.

During a video call, moderate Democrats took on AOC prior to the vote, as she’s called for ‘new leadership’ in her party and gotten in a public feud with fellow Democrat, Sen. Joe Manchin.

Rep. Kathleen Rice (left), a New York Democrat, bested AOC to get a seat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. In recent weeks, Ocasio-Cortez has called for fresh party leadership and feuded with Sen. Joe Manchin (right)

During a private meeting of the Steering and Policy Committee – where members secretly voted 46 to 13 in favor of Rice – Democrats called out Ocasio-Cortez for supporting progressive primary challengers over House incumbents, Politico reported.

‘I’m taking into account who works against other members in primaries and who doesn’t,’ said Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat who faced the AOC-backed primary opponent, Jessica Cisneros, according to the newsite.

AOC also got called out for refusing to pay party campaign dues.

Ocasio-Cortez withheld money to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee over its policy to ‘blacklist’ political firms and vendors who support Democratic primary challengers.

Most members of the New York delegation signed statements of support for both Ocasio-Cortez and Rice, with the exception of House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, who only signed AOC’s document, Politico reported.

While a superstar on the left, Ocasio-Cortez has long ruffled the feathers of more moderate Democrats.

She was in a weeks-long back-and-forth with Manchin of West Virginia, taking umbrage when he said, ‘She’s more active on Twitter than anything else.’

‘I find it amusing when politicians try to diminish the seriousness of our policy work, movement organizing and grassroots fundraising to “she just tweets,” as though “serious” politics is only done by begging corporate CEOs for money through wax-sealed envelopes delivered by raven,’ Ocasio-Cortez shot back.

AOC sent out a tweet showing her staring daggers into the back of moderate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s head, during their weeks-long feud, which showed the left-moderate divide of the current Democratic Party

More recently she suggested there should be new leadership at the top of the caucus, during an appearance on The Intercept’s ‘Intercepted’ podcast.

First, she talked about being disillusioned by the party before running for a Congressional seat.

‘You know, for me personally it was when I was waitressing, and I would hear Democrats talk about why the Affordable Care Act was so amazing all the time and how this is the greatest thing ever, and the economy was doing wonderfully,’ she recalled. ‘And frankly, it is the same trick that Trump pulls, which is, you know, people touting the Dow as a measure of economic success, when we’re all getting killed out here.’

‘And so, you know, do we need new leadership of the Democratic Party? Absolutely,’ she said. ‘But how do we ensure that when we shift, we don’t even move further to the right?’

The Republican leader of the Senate, Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) was slow to decide, but the Electoral College vote convinced him that the president Donald trump he had lost on November 3.

This morning, McConnell congratulated the president-elect Joe biden.

“So, as of this morning, our country officially has a president-elect and a vice-president-elect.”McConnell said. “The Electoral College has spoken. So today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden. “

After McConnell’s position, defenders of President Trump began to publish messages against him, calling him a “traitor”, since the president continues with his accusations of “electoral fraud”, despite the fact that he has lost the battles in court for lack evidence, in addition to the fact that the Supreme Court refused to address their claims.

“In other words, Cocaine addict Mitch does not plan to fight for the truth,” considered user Joel Fischer. The label “Cocaine Mitch” became a trend on Twitter.

The Electoral College confirmed the 302 votes in favor of Democrat Biden and 232 for President Trump.

Now, Congress will have to certify the election on January 6, where some Republicans in the House are expected to criticize the process, but it will be difficult to stop the last step before the inauguration of the new government on January 20.
