Toxic relationship leads to murder

A Montrealer accused of stabbing her partner to death was a battered woman who was living in the infernal cycle of domestic violence, she testified in her defense on Tuesday.

“It was always the same thing: things are bad, he apologizes, things are fine, then there is another episode of violence,” said Sabrina Rose Dufour on Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse.

Standing in the witness box, the 28-year-old woman accused of manslaughter recounted the toxic relationship she had with Philip Lloyd Celian before the latter’s death in February 2019. At that time, the accused lived in a women’s shelter when she went to Mr. Celian’s.

During this meeting, the latter would have hit her. Then the next day she allegedly killed him with a steak knife. She was arrested soon after, when she allegedly confessed everything to a police officer.

While the exact circumstances of the homicide are not yet known, Dufour spoke at length about her toxic relationship with the victim on Tuesday.

“I was very isolated, I was ashamed,” she said.

The accused thus described an event in a Montreal home the year before the homicide, where Mr. Celian allegedly started beating her over a trivial matter.

“He really smashed my face, like he was letting off steam on something,” she testified. The next day, he apologized by bringing me [une crème] for a face mask, that softened me up. Naively, I told myself that it wasn’t her fault, that it was because of the alcohol, that it was going to change. “

Except that nothing would have changed. In the months that followed, she said she was repeatedly beaten.

“As usual, I would go and hide in the bathroom to cry,” she said.

Cycle of violence

The couple then reportedly moved to east Montreal, but the bickering continued, despite some lulls.

“Several times I left,” she said, explaining that each time, she ended up accepting her partner’s apologies. The episodes of violence, there have been so many … It’s a cycle. “

The testimony continues this week at the Montreal courthouse, during which Dufour is expected to explain the exact circumstances of the homicide.

But from the start of the trial, Crown Attorney Jasmine Guillaume warned that we should not be “fooled by appearances” and that according to the prosecution, Dufour had indeed committed manslaughter.

The trial, before a jury, is chaired by judge Hélène Di Salvo. Lawyer François Taddeo is in charge of the defense.

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo leads world condemnation of Kremlin for arresting Alexei Navalny

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo leads world condemnation of Kremlin for arresting Alexei Navalny – but Moscow hits back telling Americans: ‘Deal with problems in your own country’

  • Mike Pompeo said he was ‘deeply troubled by Russia’s decision to arrest’ Navalny
  • UK’s Foreign Office said Moscow was ‘persecuting the victim’ of a ‘terrible crime’
  • EU leaders and governments also criticised the arrest; some called for sanctions
  • Navalny was attacked with Novichok in August and had been treated in Germany
  • He flew back to Russia for the first time last night and was immediatelydetained

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo led criticism

Leading politicians and diplomats called for the immediate release of Alexei Navalny last night after the Russian opposition figure was detained by security forces minutes after landing back in Moscow.

The United States, the European Union, several EU governments, Canada and a senior aide to US President-elect Joe Biden called for him to be freed, with some in the EU urging new sanctions against Moscow.

Navalny and his wife Yulia flew into Russia yesterday from Berlin for the first time since he was left fighting for life having been poisoned with the chemical weapon Noivchok five months ago.

The Kremlin had ordered Navalny to return saying his continued stay in Germany, where were was flown in a coma in August, breached a suspended jail sentence against him. The warned him he risked detention on landing.

But after Navalny was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport last night, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo led the condemnation of Moscow.

Pompeo, who serves in the out-going Trump administration, said the US ‘strongly condemns’ he decision to arrest Navalny and called his detention ‘the latest in a series of attempts to silence Navalny and other opposition figures and independent voices who are critical of Russian authorities.’

Pompeo added on Twitter: ‘Deeply troubled by Russia’s decision to arrest Aleksey Navalny.

‘Confident political leaders do not fear competing voices, nor see the need to commit violence against or wrongfully detain, political opponents.’

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for national security adviser called on Russian authorities to free Navalny.

‘Mr. Navalny should be immediately released, and the perpetrators of the outrageous attack on his life must be held accountable,’ Jake Sullivan said in a tweet.

A statement from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: ‘We are deeply concerned by the detention on 17 January of Alexei Navalny.

‘Instead of persecuting the victim of this terrible crime, the Russian authorities should investigate how a chemical weapon came to be used on Russian soil.’

Charles Michel, president of the European Council, demanded Navalny’s immediate release.

And EU member Lithuania said on Sunday it would ask tBrussels to swiftly impose new sanctions on Russia, something Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek said he wanted discussed.

Human rights groups joined the calls, with Amnesty International saying Navalny had become a prisoner of conscience and accusing Russian authorities of waging ‘a relentless campaign’ to silence him.

European Council president Charles Michel wrote on Twitter that Navalny’s detention was ‘unacceptable’, while the French foreign ministry said the arrest caused ‘very strong concern’.

‘Mr Navalny should be immediately released, and the perpetrators of the outrageous attack on his life must be held accountable,’ Biden’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan tweeted.

But unrepentant Kremlin officials bit back overnight.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova took aim at foreign leaders in a Facebook post – telling them to ‘respect international law’ and ‘deal with the problems in your own country’.

A number of celebrities took to social media on Wednesday after supporters of President Donald Trump violently stormed the U.S. Capitol to protest his election loss to President-elect Joe Biden, leading to the death of one woman and politicians scrambling to safety.

‘I’m speechless,’ said Captain America actor Chris Evans. ‘Just think of the carnage had they not been white. So many people enabled this.’

Some questioned the effectiveness of authorities on hand, stating that the response would have been significantly different if the protesters were Black.

Actor Armie Hammer said, ‘Reported shots fired inside the house chambers. This is why we can’t have nice things, you f***ing mouth breathers who stormed the capital … It’s a good thing this wasn’t a BLM rally or else these a******s would have actual riot police to deal with.’

Actor Jeffrey Wright said, ‘Hold on. You mean the “grab ’em by the p****,” d*** joke at a Presidential debate, ‘I could stand in the middle of 5th Ave & shoot somebody,” “Russia, if you’re listening,” “I would like you to do us a favor tho,” “Fellas, I need 11,000 votes.” guy was actually a criminal bum?!!’

US Capitol Riots: Arizona QAnon supporter leads pro-Trump mob

A horned Arizona QAnon supporter who stood at the Senate dais moments after Vice President Mike Pence delivered his rebuke to Donald Trump and an insurrectionist who put his feet on Pelosi’s desk and ‘scratched his balls’ in her office were among the violent mob of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol Wednesday – sending the seat of the federal government into lockdown and temporarily halting the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in its tracks.

The heavily-tattooed Trump supporter sporting horns, a fur hat and face paint, who has become a fixture at recent right-wing rallies while decked out in his signature attire, has been identified as 32-year-old Jake Angeli – the man often dubbed the QAnon Shaman.

Angeli was at the front of a group of agitators who broke into the Capitol and faced off with DC police who desperately tried in vain to protect the establishment.

He then made his way into the Senate chamber where he was seen shouting and posing for photos on the dais.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old Arkansas man entered House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, where he boasted that he ‘wrote her a nasty note, put my feet up on her desk and scratched my balls.’

Richard ‘Bigo’ Barnett later – who claims he will run for Arkansas governor in 2022 – told the New York Times he ‘fell’ into her office after he was pictured making himself comfortable in Pelosi’s chair, as he showed off a personalized envelope he stole as a souvenir.

Other key figures in the riot, who are yet to be identified, include a looter in a bobble hat who smiled for a photo as he made off with Nancy Pelosi’s lectern.

Outside the chaos in the capitol, another vocal Trump supporter Leigh Ann Luck, dressed up as the Statue of Liberty as she shouted in protest against Biden’s victory.

Angeli flexed his left arm as he stood behind the dais in the Senate chamber where just moments earlier Vice President Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi had stood.

He was flanked by an American flag and his fellow rioters took photos of him on their smartphones.

The ‘Qanon Shaman’ was also seen screaming in the chamber and clutching a megaphone.

In Pelosi’s office, 60-year-old Barnett posed for a photo reclining in the House Speaker’s chair before he later returned to the crowd of supporters outside and flashed a hand-written envelope he had looted.

Barnett, who calls himself Bigo, flashed the envelope to New York Times reporter Matthew Rosenberg which was addressed to The Honorable Billy Long and had Pelosi’s signature on it.

‘I didn’t steal it,’ he claimed, saying he ‘left a quarter on her desk’.

‘And I left her a note on her desk that says “Nancy Bigo was here you b**ch”.’

He also denied storming her office, claiming he politely knocked on her office door and was pushed in by other protesters.

‘I’ll probably be telling them this is what happened all the way to the DC jail,’ he said.

Both men are vocal supporters of the president and have been spotted at other protests in support of Trump’s repeated unfounded claims that the election was stolen from him.

Angeli has become a prominent figure at pro-Trump rallies, always sporting his signature outfit of fur, horns, face paint and bare chest, where he has spouted off about QAnon conspiracy theories.

Most recently he has been active at Arizona rallies calling for the results of the presidential election to be overturned, after Trump has refused to concede and pushed unfounded claims of voter fraud ever since he lost to Joe Biden.

At a pro-Trump rally at the Arizona State Capitol in February, he held aloft a banner reading ‘Q Sent Me’ in reference to QAnon.

He was also seen at reopen Arizona rallies protesting against lockdowns put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In one photo posted on his Facebook account in November, where he calls himself Yellowstone Wolf, Angeli is seen shaking hands with Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney – who hours before the violence kicked off encouraged supporters to pursue a ‘trial by combat’.

He has also posted about numerous conspiracy theories including a video claiming there is a ‘globalist plot for world domination thru the plandemic & its numerous different agendas’.

Angeli has previously admitted his belief in QAnon started after reading conspiracy theories on the internet.

‘At a certain point, it all clicked in a way,’ he said in an interview in February, reported AZCentral.

‘Oh, my God. I see now the reality of what’s going on.’

QAnon is the debunked extreme right wing conspiracy theory that claims Satan-worshipping pedophiles are plotting against Trump and are running a global child sex trafficking ring.

An undated profile for Angeli on Backstage.com shows the 32-year-old was a singer, screenwriter and actor.

Barnett has also bought into Trump’s unfounded claims that the election has been ‘stolen’ from him and has been spotted at other Stop The Steal rallies including one in Bentonville in November.

In a November post on Facebook, where he goes by the alias George Reincarnated Patton, Barnett claimed he will run for governor of Arkansas in 2022 saying he will ‘be running on the COMMON SENSE platform’.

He has also shared images of the Gadsden flag snake – which is regarded as a racist symbol – and boasts of being a white nationalist.

In several photos, he is seen posing with semi-automatic rifles.

The National Guard was deployed to the US Capitol Wednesday afternoon after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building and violently clashed with police.

One woman has died after she was shot in the chest when she reportedly tried to climb through a window.

It is not clear who shot the woman, meanwhile dozens of police officers have also been injured in the violence.

At least one explosive device was found near the Capitol amid the violence, according to law enforcement sources.

As protesters continued to occupy the Capitol hours after the violence unfolded, President-elect Joe Biden called for the ‘mob to pull back’ and said the uprising bordered on sedition.

Trump – after remaining silent for much of the afternoon – told his ‘very special’ supporters inside the Capitol that he loves them and understands their pain but urged them ‘to go home’.

He had initially urged his supporters to march to the Capitol after a rally earlier in the afternoon before only asking them to remain peaceful when violence broke out.

As the protesters broke down police barricades and stormed into the Rotunda, Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi and other congressional leaders were whisked to safety.

Lawmakers cowering inside the House Chamber were urged to put on gas masks as tear gas was fired in the Rotunda.

Officers at the front door of the chamber had their guns drawn as a protester tried to break down the door.

For those fleeing, it was a race against time: Protesters were getting in as quickly as members of Congress could get out.

Manchester City’s Khaldoon Al Mubarak leads tributes to Colin Bell

Dubai: Manchester City legend Colin Bell has died at the age of 74. The midfielder — who began his career at Bury, before moving to City in 1966 passed away after a short illness.

“It is with the deepest sadness and heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Manchester City legend Colin Bell. Colin passed away peacefully this afternoon. He leaves behind wife Marie, children Jon and Dawn and grandchildren, Luke, Mark, Isla and Jack,” a City statement said

“He is widely regarded to be the finest City player of his generation, making 492 appearances and scoring 152 goals for the Club during a 13-year stay. Few players have left such an indelible mark on City.

“Known as Colin The King, in 2004 fans voted to name a stand inside the Etihad Stadium after him and his name is still sung regularly at matches.”

City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak led the tributes, saying: “Colin Bell will always be remembered as one of Manchester City’s greatest players and the very sad news today of his passing will affect everybody connected to our club.

“I am fortunate to be able to speak regularly to his former manager and teammates, and it’s clear to me that Colin was a player held in the highest regard by all those who had the privilege of playing alongside him or seeing him play. The passage of time does little to erase the memories of his genius. The fact that we have a stand at the Etihad Stadium named after Colin speaks volumes about the importance of his contribution to this club.

“Colin was incredibly humble and a modest and understated man with an obvious inner strength of character. He was clearly comfortable with who he was and what he had achieved in the game. For the rest of us, there is always the thought of what might have been if injury had not affected his career. Undoubtedly more trophies for City and far more than the 49 England caps to his name.”

The England star was part of the Bell, Lee and Summerbee trio at Manchester City and has a stand named in his honour at the Etihad.

Chloe Ferry leads reality stars going wild in Dubai for New Year’s Eve

A night out in Dubai was the hot ticket for New Year’s Eve this year as a whole host of reality stars partied hard in the United Arab Emirates.

While most of the UK had to say goodbye to 2020 in their homes with only their nearest and dearest for company, the likes of Chloe Ferry, Georgia Steele and Olivia Bowen danced -mask free- into the small hours after escaping travel restrictions back home.

As of December 2020, three quarters of the UK was plunged into Tier 4 restrictions – meaning travel abroad for leisure purposes is ‘not permitted’ with the exception of work, education and childcare purposes.

However, a number of British stars explained their trips have been for business purposes with many sharing their plans on their social media pages.

Chloe Ferry also documented her glamorous night on Instagram

And while in Dubai many celebs seized the chance to see in 2021 in extravagant style.

Love Island 2018 star Hayley Hughes slipped on a tiny white mini dress to join the crowds.

The venue Hayley attended was decked out with podium dancers, a live band and a packed out dancefloor with an incredible firework display erupting at the stroke of midnight.

“Living my best life,” Hayley told her followers as she treated them to glimpses of the bash on her Instagram.

Ellie Brown was also in town

Geordie Shore’s Sophie Kasaei was also having a wild time in the hard-partying city.

She was joined by ex Love Islanders Gabby Allen and Olivia Bowen with her husband Alex, who was seen taking a turn on the DJ decks.

Speaking about the trip to OK! magazine in November, Alex said:”Dubai is great for rooftop drinks! We’re really excited to see what New Year’s Eve is all about there too, we’ve had friends that have been for it before and they’ve all said its OTT which will be fun!”

As she shared snaps of her glamorous evening, the Love Island star gave a plug to Dubai store Beach City as she told her followers to have a ‘special and blessed new year.’

Chloe Ferry also headed out onto the strip with her girl friends and bumped into Love Island 2019 star Anton Danyluk and her old Geordie Shore pal Sophie Kasaei.

Andy Cohen leads hoards of critics tearing into Bill de Blasio for dancing during NYE

Andy Cohen blasted Bill de Blasio in a drunken on-air rant on New Year’s Eve after the embattled mayor was seen dancing and celebrating in New York City as he bid farewell to a tumultuous year for the Big Apple.

Cohen joined CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday night in hosting the network’s live coverage of the annual ball drop in Times Square, where only a handful of guests were invited this year due to the pandemic.

Just before the clock struck at midnight, de Blasio was seen pushing the button to start the crystal ball’s descent as his wife, Chirlane McCray stood by his side. The pair were then seen onstage dancing into the new year.

But the mayor’s celebratory dance didn’t sit well with Cohen, who knocked back tequila shots with Cooper before slamming de Blasio over his leadership.

‘That’s how I felt when I saw Mayor de Blasio dancing just now,’ Cohen said as Cooper grimaced from the shot. ‘I did not need to see that at the beginning of 2021.’

He then addressed de Blasio directly on television, shouting: ‘Do something with this city! Honestly, get it together!’

Happy New Year: Andy Cohen blasted Mayor Bill de Blasio for dancing on New Year’s Eve in a drunken, on-air rant

It comes as New York authorities have been struggling to combat a surge in crime in the city amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Crime stats from the four weeks between November 30 – December 27 showed violent crime in the Big Apple is far higher than it was at the same time last year.

In the 28 days to December 27 2020 there were 21 murders – an increase of 61.5 percent when compared with the same dates in 2019. There was also a 4.2 percent increase in rapes, and a staggering 122.4 percent surge in shootings.

Violent crime began spiking following a $1 billion cut to the NYPD’s budget which was approved this past summer following passionate protests to defund the police.

Officials have failed to take responsibility for the surge in crime, instead shifting blame.

After midnight, de Blasio took to Twitter to wish his residents a happy new year and praised their resilience during such a year.

‘As a city, as a community, we have been through so much this year. We showed our resolve and proved New York City will come back stronger than ever,’ he tweeted.

But the tweet quickly drew criticism from angry New Yorkers who accused the mayor of ruining the city.

‘After you and Cuomo destroyed NYC give it about 20-30 years to come back you useless a**h***,’ one person said in an expletive-laced tweet.

‘2020 was just another year during which [de Blasio] destroyed the city,’ added another.

‘Failure mayor,’ another replied. ‘Way to ruin NYE in NYC. You should be ashamed of yourself,’ one user added.

Times Square is usually at the center of the world’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, with tens of thousands of people packing in to the commercial hub every December 31st to watch the ball drop at midnight.

But, this year, the time-honored tradition was modified amid the ongoing pandemic, with members of the public prohibited from gathering in the area for the first time since the ball-drop began back in 1907.

However, a few dozen people did gather near Times Square Thursday night wearing colorful hats and 2021 glasses. Many appeared to be wearing masks as others took the opportunity to pose for photos near the area.

Earlier on Thursday, de Blasio told reporters ‘It’s going to be actually, arguably, the most special, the most poignant, the most moving New Year’s Eve.’

‘In 2021, we’re going to show people what it looks like to recover, to come back,’ the mayor added.

Shortly after the ball dropped, TV host Andy Cohen slammed de Blasio for how he’s handled issues in the city.

‘I just don’t need to see that at the beginning of 2021,’ Cohen said, referring to de Blasio and his wife dancing. ‘Do something with this city!’ Cohen said as CNN’s Anderson Cooper laughed.

‘Honestly get it together,’ Cohen yelled.

Others also took to social media to slam de Blasio for his leadership over the Big Apple.

‘@NYCMayor way to ruin NYE in NYC. You should be ashamed of yourself,’ one person wrote.

Another shared: ‘2020 was just another year during which @NYCMayor destroyed NYC.’

On Thursday afternoon Times Square was eerily empty, with the area cordoned off to the public and police patrolling nearby sidewalks to enforce social distancing.

The Big Apple is battling against a second wave of COVID-19 infections, as well as soaring rates of violent crime, an uptick in closing businesses, and a drastic drop in revenue.

Hopes for a brighter 2021 have been dampened by news of a dismally slow roll-out of the coronavirus vaccine, with a paltry 29.7 per cent of available doses administered across New York as of Wednesday.

New Year’s Eve celebrations first began in Times Square back in 1907, and people have gathered there every year since.

Even in 2001, less than four months after the September 11 terrorist attacks, crowds converged upon the commercial strip to celebrate the start of a New Year.

But this year, officials have officially barred the public from moving in. The only people allowed into the area are media and invited first responders who have been hailed as the ‘Heroes of 2020’.

However, the ball drop will still go ahead and people are encouraged to watch the event virtually. Performances will also still take place, albeit without an audience.

Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus and Megan Thee Stallion took the stage as part of the festivities.

However, for many weary New Yorkers, there does not seem much to celebrate.

On Wednesday, The Big Apple reported its highest ever daily increase in coronavirus cases, with nearly 6,000 new infections confirmed across the five boroughs.

Hospitalizations and deaths are also increasing at an alarming rate. Gov Andrew Cuomo is now preparing to reopen the Javits Center field hospital, designed to treat an influx of COVID cases.

Festivities in Newry, Maine, began promptly at 9pm and consisted of fireworks at the Sunday River resort.

In Florida, female impersonator Gary Marion, known as Sushi, performed Thursday night during the New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop.

Normally held on Duval Street at midnight, the event was moved behind Key West’s Bourbon St Pub and occurred several hours early to comply with a mandatory 10pm curfew that Key West city officials ordered to reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus.

Tom Brady leads Buccaneers to playoffs in easy win over Lions

DETROIT — Tom Brady threw four touchdown passes in the only half he needed to play and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went on to rout the Detroit Lions 47-7 Saturday, sealing a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

The Bucs (10-5) set a franchise record with 588 yards and snapped the NFL’s second-longest postseason drought behind Cleveland’s 18-year run that can end Sunday.

Tampa Bay rested Brady ahead 34-0, its largest halftime lead in franchise history. Blaine Gabbert threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski on his first snap, one play after Detroit running back D’Andre Swift fumbled, and a 22-yard pass to Mike Evans later in the third quarter.

Brady was 22 of 27 for 348 yards with a mix of passes deep down the field and darts in traffic. The six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback threw touchdown passes to Gronkowski, Evans, Chris Godwin, who made a one-handed catch, and Antonio Brown from 33, 27, 7 and 12 yards.

The 43-year-old Brady, who split time with Drew Henson in college at Michigan, started his 298th game to tie Brett Favre’s record for an NFL quarterback and played in his 300th game.

The Lions (5-10) started the game without interim coach Darrell Bevell along with assistants on the defensive staff because of COVID-19 contact tracing.

And they played much of the game without Matthew Stafford. He was questionable to play with hip and thumb injuries and then hurt his right ankle on the opening drive and did not return.

Chase Daniel struggled to move the ball much for the Lions, who avoided getting shut out for the second time this season in the third quarter when Jamal Agnew returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown. Daniel was replaced in the fourth quarter by David Blough, an undrafted rookie last year.

Brady has thrown a franchise-record 36 touchdowns and set a personal record with 348 yards passing by halftime. Brady and Gabbert combined to throw a Bucs-record six touchdowns. Tampa Bay set team records in points (34) and yards (410) in the first half. Evans, who had 10 catches for 181 yards, scored twice to set a team record with 13 receiving touchdowns.
