Tile is prepping an AirTags competitor that could let you find lost items through walls

Tile is working on a new tracker that relies on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, which would put the company in direct competition with Apple’s yet-to-be-announced AirTags, according to a report from TechCrunch. The new tracker would go a step further than the company’s Bluetooth devices by allowing you to know more precisely where a lost item is in relationship to yourself, without having to listen for a chime the tracker plays.

Apple’s AirTags haven’t been officially announced, but there’s already a list of potential features they might have, like the ability to remind you if you’ve left an item behind or help you find lost items using augmented reality. Samsung has also expressed interest in offering similar features, so Tile could be sharing space with two larger companies. Apple demoed UWB with its U1 chip in the iPhone 11, which let you direct AirDropped files by pointing your phone, but the tracking applications are even more interesting.

Tile’s rumored UWB tracker shares a similar design to Tile’s bluetooth offerings.

Ultra-wideband (not to be confused with Ultra Wideband 5G from Verizon) operates sort of like Bluetooth Low Energy. It sends out low-energy, short-range pulses at a high frequency that transmit wireless data. With Bluetooth and your phone’s GPS, Tile can show the general location of something on a map, but for anything more precise, it relies on sound to help you find things. A UWB device could work if you’re multiple rooms away, showing you the more precise location of something through walls or floors, while also offering the features Tile currently has.

Imagine finding a lost valuable when it’s out of earshot or locked inside a container. Tile’s app (or Apple’s or Samsung’s) could point you in the right direction with your phone, using augmented reality images superimposed on your camera feed. It actually seems useful and less annoying than a loud chirp from Tile’s trackers (something I almost always accidentally set off).

The augmented reality tracking experience Tile could add to its app.
Image: Tile / TechCrunch

What’s more exciting is you may already own a device that supports these features. Since the iPhone 11, Apple has been integrating UWB into its popular smartphone with the U1 chip. It’s also started placing the chip in the Apple Watch, starting with the Series 6. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra already features UWB, and the upcoming Galaxy S21 Ultra is confirmed to feature it as well.

Not every device either company sells has it on board (Apple devices like the iPhone SE, Apple Watch SE, and iPad Pro don’t have UWB), but since Apple and Samsung are two of the largest electronic device makers in the world, adoption of UWB could be quick.

There’s no set date for Tile’s launch of its UWB tracker, but UWB seems like it could be a big deal, especially now that Apple has opened up access to the U1 chip in iOS 14. Tile and Apple have disagreed in the past over default location sharing settings that disadvantage Tile, but at least both companies seem to agree on the potential of UWB in 2021.

9 items to avoid putting on the face | The State

The search for perfect skin can lead us to place on our face elements that are not favorable, or that are even dangerous and harmful to the skin, as indicated by Webconsultas. These are elements that we have to keep away from our face.

Lemon, hair dye, hot water, toothpaste, and even urine are some of the things that people have used on their faces with the idea that it would help them, but that in the end are not recommended for this situation.

1. Toothpaste

Some people put toothpaste on their faces with the idea of removing pimples and whitening facial blemishes, but the truth is that toothpaste does not have this ability.

What toothpaste does do on the face is irritate it, increase its dryness or lead to relatively severe burns.

2. Hair spray

There are women who use hairspray to add the finishing touch to their makeup. However, lacquer has components that dry out the skin of the face or that can promote an allergic reaction.

It is preferable to go for real makeup fixers over hairspray, even if these are more expensive.

3. Hot water

Washing your face with hot water can destroy the layer of moisture that the skin has to protect itself. This will cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum to compensate, which is especially bad for the people prone to acne.

4. Hair dye

Many people use hair dye on their eyebrows and this is not recommended, because this is a very aggressive product for the skin of the face due to its high levels of peroxide, which can burning the epidermis or injuring the eyes.

5. Lemon

You should not put lemon on your face as it can alter the pH of your skin. Source: Pexels

This citrus fruit has very high acid levels, which will alter the natural pH of the skin. This fruit is usually used on pimples that appear on the face, especially during puberty.

6. Glue

The glue does not remove blackheads from the face with the required effectiveness, and this method can also irritate the skin, remove the top layer of skin or cause a break in the blood vessels.

7. Baking soda

Bicarbonate has been attributed a use as facial scrub, but it is not recommended to use it on the face because, like lemon, it alters the natural PH of that area. While the PH of bicarbonate is 9, that of the face ranges between 4.5 and 5.

The alkalinity of bicarbonate can alter the natural barrier of the skin, necessary so that it can protect itself from harmful microorganisms.

8. Body cream

It is not advisable to apply the body cream on the face because it can contain intense perfumes that irritate it, as well as very greasy ingredients for the sector that can lead to the formation of blackheads due to clogging of the pores.

9. Urine

Those who apply urine to their face justify this practice because of the water and urea content that the liquid would have. Urea is an ingredient widely used in creams because it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.

However, the level of urea in the urine is very low and insufficient to generate the expected benefits.

Seek professional help for what you want to do with your face so as not to expose yourself to risks or side effects from these elements. It is the most prudent way to act and that will avoid unnecessary and stressful troubles.

Inside Gigi Hadid’s nursery: FEMAIL reveals pricey items in model’s baby room

Gigi Hadid has offered a rare peek inside her baby’s nursery, showing off a beautiful baby room decorated with mountains of throw pillows, plenty of stuffed animals, and an entire wall of reading material.

Gigi, 25, welcomed her first child with her partner Zayn Malik back in September — and though the couple hasn’t revealed the name of their little girl, Gigi has now given a brief tour of the room where she sleeps.

In a series of photos she shared on Instagram on Monday night, the supermodel showed off a dresser stacked with tiny boxes from Tiffany & Co., a pair of very stylish baby-sized sunglasses, and a cozy daybed for mom near baby’s crib.

A little look: Gigi Hadid, 25, offered a rare peek inside her baby’s nursery with a series of Instagram photos, revealing many of the items inside, including cute plush toys

Homey: The images offer a look at her furniture and decor, including a striped rug, lots of stuffed animals, and artwork

According to Gigi’s caption, the images were taken ‘the night before I went into labor,’ with the first one showing the mom-to-be in all black with a big baby bump.

Cuddly: She has a Jellycat Bashful Bunny, a $22.50 stuffed bunny that comes with a book called 'If I Were a Bunny'

Behind her is a room of warm colors and earthy touches, from the terracotta walls to the hardwood floors.

She’s decorated that floor with a large patterned rug with muted, multicolor stripes and geometric designs on top.

The room has a few pieces of furniture, including a $998 Anthropologie rattan daybed for mom to sit on, a $670 hand-woven rattan chair from Pottery Barn, and a $1,249 Sacred Bundle teak crib.

The chair is draped with a fluffy white throw blanket, while the daybed is piled high with throw pillows, the sum total of which cost a small fortune.

Among them are two $88 Flower-Dyed Ardel Pillow tie-dye pillows, two $290 Charlie Sprout Nagazi Pillows, two $390 Charlie Sprout Almasi Pillows, two $345 Charlie Sprout Bonded Pillows, and a $138 All Roads Open Market Pillow — all from Anthropologie.

In total, the model has more than $2,300 worth of throw pillows.

Nestled into the pillows are a stuffed bear and a $30 Annie Selke stuffed chicken.

Relaxed: The room is done in warm colors and earthy touches, with terracotta walls and neutral accents

There are more stuffed animals sitting on the shelf above it: A pair of stuffed bunnies, a toy unicorn, and a few toy cacti sit together next to framed photographs.

One of those bunnies appears to be the Jellycat Bashful Bunny, a $22.50 stuffed bunny that comes with a book called ‘If I Were a Bunny,’ while the other is an $80 Hazel Village Penelope Rabbit Doll from Pottery Barn.

Somewhere to relax: Gigi added a $750 hand-woven rattan rocking chair from Pottery Barn

There are even more stuffed animals in the crib, including at least two stuffed bears — which Gigi presumably removed once the baby came home, as it can be dangerous for newborns to sleep with toys in the crib.

The crib is holding lots of stuff, including a pink onesie and what appears to be Missoni sleeping bag-style ‘zig zag nest.’

Next to the crib is a glimpse of a $640 Sacred Bundle rattan changing table.

Gigi’s photo with the crib also shows the top of a dresser, which is is stacked with a mirror, a pair of robin’s egg blue Tiffany & Co. boxes, and even more tiny stuffed animals in a $78 Maileg USA Noah’s Ark set.

Other items on the dresser include a set of rainbow books and a pair of tiny round baby sunglasses.

Cute: Gigi put an old-fashioned VCR filter on another photo revealing her daughter’s crib, which was filled with stuffed animals

The dresser is topped with wipes, a basket of creams, a framed piece of paper with unreadable text, and a $108 Olli Ella Reva changing basket, also from Anthropologie.

For decor, Gigi also several woven baskets near and on top of the dressers, as well as four white rattan Charlie & Marlow x Sacred swallows — which cost $69.99 —fastened to the wall.

Another wall shows a piece of art by the baby’s ‘auntie’ Austyn Weiner.

Most revealing is the baby’s bookshelf, which takes up the better part of a wall and has over five dozen books.

Titles include ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ by Judith Kerr, a Hairy Maclary book, a Barney story called ‘The New Babysitter,’ and ‘One Tricky Monkey Up on Top’ by Jane Belk Moncure.

Queen’s servant, 37, admits stealing items worth £100,000 from Buckingham Palace

A servant to the Queen today admitted stealing two prestigious medals from Buckingham Palace as well as other items worth up to £100,000.

Adamo Canto, 37, swiped a Companion of the Order of the Bath medal belonging to retired Navy vice-admiral Sir Anthony Johnstone-Burt, the Queen’s Master of the Household, and sold it on auction website eBay for £350.

He also swiped a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order belonging to retired British Army officer Major General Matthew Sykes, who served in the Royal Household from 2007 to 2010, during his nine-month spree.

Canto also admitted stealing other items including signed photos of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and a photo album of the Royal State Banquet during Donald Trump’s state visit, which he flogged for £1,500 on eBay.

Some 77 items were taken from the palace shop, while others were stolen from staff lockers, the linen room, the Royal Collection ticket office, the Queen’s Gallery shop and the Duke of York’s storeroom, the court heard.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that 37 items were offered for sale on eBay ‘well under’ their true value, with Canto making £7,741.

District Judge Alexander Jacobs released him on conditional bail and sent the case to Southwark Crown Court for sentencing at a later date, warning Canto he faces a possible jail sentence.

Former catering assistant Canto, who had worked at the Palace for five years, was given additional cleaning duties during Covid-19 lockdown and used them to steal from locker rooms.

Not all of the stolen items have been recovered, the court was told.

Simon Maughan, prosecuting, said: ‘It appears that Mr Canto, who at the time was living at the Royal Mews in Buckingham Palace, had various items that had been taken from within Buckingham Palace.

‘One of the complainants had located the medal on eBay having been sold on May 27. It was an account called AdamoSalvatori123 which was tracked to Mr Canto.

‘Forensic data was provided by eBay. His sale history shows 37 items that had been sold from Buckingham Palace.

‘At the time, Mr Canto was employed as a catering assistant and indeed he worked at Buckingham Palace since 2015.

‘It appears to be the case he had taken advantage of lockdown of offices during Covid-19 and given extra cleaning roles, a deep clean giving him access to items he would not normally be given in his catering role.

‘Police attended the Royal Mews and arrested him. A search was carried out, and some items were recovered.

‘His parents’ address in Scarborough was also searched and it appears he sold the 37 eBay items for £7,741.23.

‘This is well under the shop value; 77 items were recovered from the Palace Shop, 11 items belonging to the Masters Department.

‘There is an aggravating factor, the trust element that people on site are to understand, uphold and comply with.’

A victim impact statement from Sir Anthony Johnstone-Burt, Queen’s Master of the Household, head of ‘below stairs operations’, said that he noticed the medal was missing on June 11 when he needed to wear it for Trooping of the Colour.

‘I had to borrow a medal and reported it on June 29. The reason I waited was because I had to make sure I hadn’t misplaced it,’ he said in a statement.

‘I had been informed by a member of the Royal Household that items from Buckingham Palace were being sold on eBay.

‘I discovered that my Companion of the Order of the Bath was up for sale for £500. It had been sold for £350. The replacement value is £665.

‘I knew this was my medal because of the ribbon. I had sewed on an additional hook and eye.’

Retired British Army officer Major General Matthew Sykes, who served in the Royal Household from 2007 to 2010, lost his Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

He said: ‘I was made aware on August 24 a number of medals had gone missing.. I checked my locker and found the medal was missing from my personal locker.

‘Police were made aware on August 25.

‘On May 12, a Royal Victorian Order box was sold. It’s possible that this was the medal that was taken from my locker.’

Mr Maughan added: ‘I say there is additional harm. The items stolen were of sentimental value regardless of worth.

‘We have figures just shy of £10,000 to £100,000.’

District Judge Alexander Jacobs told Canto: ‘Obviously you’ve done the right thing by pleading guilty at the first opportunity.

‘I commit to the Crown Court for sentencing as my powers are not sufficient to deal with this today. I cannot tell you when, but it will usually be in three or four weeks.

‘I grant you bail but you must turn up at Southwark Crown Court on the day you are told otherwise you may be committing a separate offence.’

Canto, of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, wore a navy suit, red tie and a black mask and only spoke to confirm his name, date of birth, address and to enter his guilty pleas.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment.
