Marcus Rashford honoured during BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Marcus Rashford honoured for his efforts to end child food poverty with a ‘Panel Special Award’ during BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year as Manchester United star admits he ‘didn’t expect’ reaction to his campaign

  • The BBC will air a documentary about Rashford’s campaign on December 21

Marcus Rashford has been honoured with a Panel Special Award during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony on Sunday night.

The Manchester United star led a successful campaign to extend the provision of free school meals for vulnerable children during the spring lockdown, and continues to work on projects to tackle child hunger.

As reported by Sportsmail, Rashford missed out on the main award because it is given purely for ‘sporting achievement’ but the judging panel unanimously agreed his work off the pitch should be commended.

Speaking during the ceremony from Media City in Salford on Sunday night, Rashford said: ‘Growing up as a kid I felt if it was a 100 metre race I started 50 metres behind everybody else.

‘It was more difficult for me to do the basic things like getting to training, eat the right things, it was a nightmare of a situation to be in, but in the end I got to where I needed to get to.

‘Once I got there I just had this thing that eats at me saying “make sure you make a difference for the next generation”.

‘I think as a country we should protect them as much as we can and give them the best chance at life and become whatever it is they want to become.’

Rashford started a campaign in June to extend free meals vouchers that has led to the Government pledging to spend £400million to support families in need throughout 2021.

He was awarded an MBE in October for services to vulnerable children during Covid-19.

Last month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a point of speaking to Rashford directly after being persuaded to introduce a raft of new measures to help the poorest children.

Rashford paid tribute to his mother, Melanie Maynard, who has revealed she would go hungry to ensure her children were fed.

‘Everything I get from what I’ve done, it will always sit in her house and it will sit where she can see it every day because she’s the person who, in difficult circumstances, brought me up to become a person that has morals.

‘My friends will tell you I haven’t changed since we were kids.’

Asked how the campaign had gathered momentum, he said: ‘It was something I tried a few years ago in Manchester but I wasn’t satisfied with the reach it was having.

‘A few years later I was speaking to my brothers and my mum and said “I’m going to have another go at it”. And then we did, and what happened since then we didn’t expect.’

The BBC will air a special access-all-areas documentary about Rashford’s campaign on December 21.

Liverpool win two awards at Sports Personality of the Year as Klopp honoured

Liverpool’s remarkable achievements in 2020 were recognised with two awards during the BBC’s Sports Personality show.

The Reds were crowned Premier League champions in late June and went on to win the top flight by a remarkable margin of 18 points, having failed to win only six of 38 matches.

Jurgen Klopp was the mastermind behind the triumph and led his side to match numerous records throughout the campaign, including the most wins (32) and most home wins (18) in a season.

The Liverpool boss was present to receive the Coach of the Year award on Sunday night, while his title-winning side received the Team of the Year accolade.

Klopp capped a superb week with another award

Accepting the award, Klopp said: “When the coach of the Team of the Year becomes the Coach of the Year then I had an outstanding team on the pitch obviously.

“Hendo (Jordan Henderson) nearly mentioned all of them, but my coaching staff is obviously the main reason why all the things worked the way they work, so I’m really happy.

“Usually you win a prize as a football coach, this time obviously all my contenders were from all different kind of sports and I never before won something like that. It’s really nice.

“On behalf of my coaches, I accept it obviously and take it home to Liverpool. Thank you very much.”

The award is Klopp’s second within the space of a week, adding to his Best FIFA Men’s Coach prize on Thursday.

The German was delighted his squad was also recognised as the Team of the Year, saying: “I think my team deserves it honestly because they did an incredible job.

Henderson finished as runner-up in the Sports Personality of the Year voting

“It’s a mix of talent, character, desire and plus the power of the club, which is really a big one. That all comes together, so we could become champion and it was a great moment, to be honest.”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson – who finished second to Lewis Hamilton in the Sports Personality of the Year voting – added: “It means a lot to the team.

“Looking from the inside, the lads deserve it because of how hard they work every single day, wanting to improve, push each other to succeed.

“But I’d also like to mention the team that you won’t see on the pitch, which I think needs a special mention because they do everything behind the scenes for us to go and perform. The likes of the medical team, fitness team, grounds staff, kitchen staff, security.

“Everybody at the training ground do everything every single day for us to go and play football to the best of our ability on the pitch. Without them, we wouldn’t have been successful in the last few years.”

Klopp’s letter to Henderson in full as Liverpool captain is honoured on SPOTY

Jurgen Klopp read out a heartfelt letter to his Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday evening.

The England midfielder was nominated for the top award after guiding the Reds to Premier League glory last season.

After lifting the Champions League trophy the season before Henderson helped Liverpool end a 30-year wait for a domestic league title in 2020.

Henderson played 30 of the 38 league games last season and is now being recognised for his efforts.

Klopp revealed Henderson had written a personal letter to every Liverpool player after the triumph and that now it is his turn.

Jurgen Klopp reads out his letter to Jordan Henderson.

“Hello friend, hello our captain,” the Liverpool boss said on BBC SPOTY.

“When we won the Premier League title last season you wrote a personal letter to every player in the squad and myself. Well, now it’s my turn. I write this letter to you.

“This Liverpool team they say we don’t have one superstar. For us the team is the star. This is true. But you are a superstar at making us that team.

“Jordan, people too often ignore your quality. But not me and not your team-mates.

“After a touch journey with many obstacles everyone can see it – personality, character and ability. The complete package.

“You led our club to ending a 30-year wait. You did it with humility and grace. You’re a world class athlete and football player but you are an even better human being.

“Thank you for everything, my friend, and here’s to a great 2021.

“With love, Jurgen.”

Henderson graced the stage himself and replied to Klopp’s kind words.

“It’s amazing the words that I hear but I still can’t believe when I look back at the times, as a kid, growing up, watching the Champions League, the Premier League to actually get there is incredible,” Henderson said.

He added: “To win the Premier League trophy I dreamt of ever since I was a little boy was a dream come true. Not only for me but for my team-mates it was a special year.”

Marcus Rashford honoured at SPOTY for raising awareness of child food poverty

Marcus Rashford has been honoured with the Panel Special Award at the BBC Sports Personality show this Sunday evening in recognition of his work to tackle child food poverty.

The Manchester United forward, 23, successfully campaigned for the government to extend the free school meals scheme over the summer during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Englishman’s efforts also helped FareShare – the charity which tackles food poverty and waste – feed over 4.2million people.

Rashford was not shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, as the judging panel agreed his efforts should be recognised with a special award.

“Marcus’ endeavour to give a voice to those who find themselves in a situation that he too is familiar with has been greatly admired and the panel wanted to ensure he was recognised for that,” said BBC director of sport Barbara Slater.

“In a year that has been challenging for everyone, but particularly vulnerable families, he has gone above and beyond to transcend his sport and make a real difference.

“This award is a tribute to a remarkable young man.”

As well as leading the ‘#MakeTheUTurn’ campaign which ensured 1.3million children continued to receive free school meals, Rashford launched the Child Food Poverty Taskforce in September.

Partnering with major supermarkets such as Aldi and Tesco, the taskforce highlights the experience of children growing up in food poverty and aims to support the National Food Strategy.

Rashford knows all about the situations of the children and families he is helping, as he suffered from food insecurity as a boy.

“I remember the sound of my mum crying herself to sleep to this day, having worked a 14-hour shift, unsure how she was going to make ends meet. That was my reality,” Rashford wrote when announcing the taskforce.

Rashford’s work this year also saw him named an MBE in October.

Greta Thunberg is ‘honoured’ by reports Amazon treats her eco movement as a ‘threat’

Greta Thunberg said she is ‘honoured’ by reports that Amazon considers her environmental activism a threat to their business.

The 17-year-old climate change activist urged Amazon to ‘reconsider its priorities’ following reports of the online retail giant’s ‘obsessive monitoring of organized labor and social and environmental movements’.

Leaked internal Amazon reports from 2019 claimed that Amazon hired operatives from the Pinkerton detective agency to keep tabs on social justice groups – including Ms Thunberg’s climate group Fridays4future.

Fridays4future consists of pupils who skip school – mainly on Fridays – to take part in protests demanding more global action on climate change and has garnered world-wide support.

The reports – seen by Motherboard – state that Ms Thunberg’s movement is ‘increasing their influence especially on young people and students’ and ‘growing and attracting more and more people rapidly.’

Ms Thunberg shared media coverage of the report on Twitter, writing: ‘We’re very honoured by this! But in all fairness, if you consider schoolchildren fighting for the right to a safe future to be a “threat to your business”, then you seriously need to reconsider your priorities…’

Vice’s technology publication Motherboard described a trove of internal Amazon reports that it said outlined the online retail giant’s ‘obsessive monitoring of organized labor and social and environmental movements’.

The reports leaked to Motherboard were written in 2019 by intelligence analysts with Amazon’s Global Security Operations Center, the security division that is responsible for protecting employees, vendors and assets at its facilities worldwide.

They revealed how Amazon recruited operatives from Pinkerton, a US-based spy agency with a decades-long record of infiltrating labor unions to thwart strikes, to monitor workers’ labor and union-organizing activities around Europe.

Jeff Bezos’ firm also tracked European activists – including Fridays4future, the Yellow Vest movement in France and Greenpeace – because they believed those demonstrations were a threat to their business.

Some of the documents suggested that Amazon could be using the same surveillance tactics in the United States, Motherboard said.

Lisa Levandowski, a spokesperson for Amazon, confirmed to Motherboard that it had hired Pinkerton to gather intelligence on its workers.

‘Like any other responsible business, we maintain a level of security within our operations to help keep our employees, buildings, and inventory safe,’ Levandowski said.

‘That includes having an internal investigations team who work with law enforcement agencies as appropriate, and everything we do is in line with local laws and conducted with the full knowledge and support of local authorities.

‘Any attempt to sensationalize these activities or suggest we’re doing something unusual or wrong is irresponsible and incorrect.’

Levandowski denied the assertion that Pinkerton operatives were working on the ground – contradicting one internal report from November 2019.

In that report, an analyst wrote that a Pinkerton operative was ‘inserted’ in an Amazon warehouse in Poland to investigate whether management was coaching job applicants on how to succeed in interviews, Motherboard reported.

Amazon and Pinkerton did not immediately return DailyMail.com’s requests for comment on Monday.

Internal GSOC emails obtained by the outlet also showed that analysts received detailed updates about labor organizing activities at warehouses around the world.

The updates pinpointed the exact date, time and location of those activities, as well as who reported them and how many people were involved, Motherboard reported.

Other documents allegedly showed how analysts kept tabs on how many warehouse workers attended union meetings and specific grievances they shared about their work conditions.

History of the Pinkerton detective agency

The Pinkerton National Detective Agency was founded in Chicago in 1850 by Scotsman Allan Pinkerton.

At the height of its power in the early 20th century, Pinkerton was the largest law enforcement agency in the country.

The US Department of Justice contracted out investigative work to Pinkerton in the 1870s, before the Anti-Pinkerton Act of 1893 banned the government from employing individuals affiliated with the firm.

Pinkerton gained a reputation for intimidating factory workers while helping companies keep unionists out of their operations.

Today, the word Pinkerton is still associated with union conflicts – but the firm focuses efforts on threat intelligence, risk management and executive protection.

The company was purchased by Swedish security company Securitas AB in 1999. It’s headquarters is now located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Christy Hoffman, general secretary of UNI Global Union, compared Amazon’s recruitment of Pinkerton to tactics used by industry tycoons who went to great lengths to crush workers’ strikes in the 19th century – sometimes with the help of the same detective firm.

‘For years people have been comparing big tech bosses to nineteenth-century robber barons, and now by using Pinkertons to do his dirty work, Bezos is making that connection even clearer,’ Hoffman told Motherboard.

Hoffman further asserted that Amazon’s anti-union tactics are creating a ‘global human rights crisis’.

‘Most American companies that try to succeed in Europe have adapted to the fact that there are strong unions here,’ she said. ‘Those that haven’t, such as Walmart and Toy R’ Us have left. But Amazon is an outlier.

‘This isn’t the way companies operate in Europe — ignoring the law, spying on workers, using every page of the US union busting playbook, as if they don’t have enough power and money on their own.

‘They need to know they’re not going to get away with that in Europe.’

The allegations outlined in Monday’s report joined a string of evidence of Amazon’s robust efforts to monitor and crackdown on its workers unionizing.

It follows reports in September that Amazon bosses were spying on delivery drivers to see if they were preparing to protest working conditions at the height of the pandemic.

There were also claims in Recode that Amazon used a software to decipher whether Whole Foods staff would unionize.

Amazon has been approached for comment.

Rashford to be honoured with special BBC Sports Personality award

Marcus Rashford is to receive a special prize at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony in recognition for his remarkable work in raising awareness of child food poverty in the UK.

The Manchester United forward has tirelessly campaigned for the poorest children to be given access to free school meals, forcing Boris Johnson’s Tory government into two embarrassing U-turns.

In June the Old Etonian prime minister was forced to concede defeat in the wake of Rashford’s campaigning, with the government overturning their callous decision not to provide £15-a-week food vouchers over the summer holidays.

Then earlier this month a beleaguered Johnson was again forced into yet another climbdown as Rashford’s calls to extend the scheme were initially ignored.

Rashford has been campaigning to end child food poverty

Johnson was ultimately forced to agree to a £170m winter grant scheme and extend the school meals plan into Easter, summer and Christmas next year.

Rashford has won huge public acclaim for the manner in which he has juggled his efforts to help others alongside those required to play in attack for United and England, and he was awarded an MBE last month.

Many had expected him to pick up the main BBC Sports Personality of the Year award prize for 2020, but with other sporting achievements taking precedence he will now receive a special prize.

He will pick the award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event in Salford on December 20.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport said: “Marcus’s endeavour to give a voice to those who find themselves in a situation that he too is familiar with has been greatly admired and the panel wanted to ensure he was recognised for that.

Rashford’s efforts have been hugely appreciated by families

“In a year that has been challenging for everyone, but particularly vulnerable families, he has gone above and beyond to transcend his sport and make a real difference. This award is a tribute to a remarkable young man.”

The hour-long documentary, to be broadcast on BBC One, promises to show Rashford’s tireless efforts in campaigning and shine a light on the issues facing some of the poorest families in the UK.

Clare Sillery, BBC Head of Commissioning for Documentaries, said: “Everyone will be familiar with the Marcus Rashford we see on the pitch but this documentary will offer a deeper insight into the man himself.

“Through our access we hope viewers will get to see just how passionate and determined he is about tackling child food poverty in Britain today”.

Richa Chadha honoured with Bharat Ratna Ambedkar award: ‘I woke up to the greatness of the giant that was Babasaheb very late in life’

Actor Richa Chadha has been awarded the Bharat Ratna Ambedkar award. The actor took to Instagram to express her happiness and her thoughts at receiving the award.

She wrote: “Thrilled to be among the recipients of the Bharat Ratna Ambedkar award, conferred upon me by the H’ble Governor of Maharashtra. I woke up to the greatness of the giant that was Babasaheb very late in life, perhaps due to my caste privilege! To not understand the caste system, is to not understand India. The awardees included people that cared for the plight of others during Covid as well ! Jai Bhim! Jai Hind! Thank you.” Richa shared two pictures as well — one where she is lighting candles in front of pictures of Lord Buddha and Babasaheb Ambedkar, and in another, where she was seen receiving the award.

Many of her friends congratulated her for the honour. Tillotama Shome wrote: “Salam Richa” while Konkona Sen Sharma said: “Congratulations! That’s wonderful!!!” Zoya Akhtar dropped a bunch of appreciative emojis in the comments section.

Richa has always expressed her views honestly. After the Democratic win in the US election, she wrote about the Vice President-elect Kamala Harris: “At about this time in 2016, the world seemed to change in one day. We were shooting the first season of Inside Edge, it was a night shoot… and demonetisation was announced! All night, people wondered of what would unfold over the next few months, worried about needing the new notes while trying to figure out how to deposit their hard earned money (in the form of old notes) in to the bank.”

“I went to bed at about 8am on the 9th November keeping a watch on the outcome of the U.S election, wondering why it was so close. I woke up at about 3pm to learn that the former host of The Apprentice had been elected to arguably the most powerful office in the world. Something broke me. It didn’t have much to do with politics… it was a strange and saddening realisation that several in a country where women outnumbered men, which was the “Greatest Nation”, which exported Hollywood to the rest of the world, still preferred a man (who boasted about grabbing p***es) over a woman. I remember calling a two friends crying, one being @krnx and the other @alifazal9 who was shooting in London at the time for V and A. No one could understand why this felt so personal, it made no sense to me either. But perhaps sometimes, really terrible things happen to show us the way. Things do get bad, worse, worst before they get better, you know what I mean ? Yes you do. Don’t make me spell it out.”

“Now a Black+ Tamil woman is going to be in the White House! Even the cynic+ anarchist in me will celebrate. Akka’s got a foot in the door. Congratulations and thank you !”

Dubai: Dubai Sports Council (DSC) has honoured 2010 World Cup winner and Spanish football legend Carles Puyol, and former France ace Nicolas Anelka with the ‘Medal of First Line of Defence’ in appreciation of their support for the council’s ongoing ‘Be Fit, Be Safe’ campaign.

Saeed Hareb, General Secretary of DSC, presented the commemorative medals to Puyol and Anelka at the council headquarters in the presence of Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant General Secretary of DSC, on Thursday.

The medals pay homage to the selfless service of Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Health Authority and Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services in the fight to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in Dubai. Together, they were at the forefront of Dubai’s fight to contain the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, alongside volunteers from different segments of the community.

Puyol, who won 18 major club titles in a decorated career with Barcelona, including six La Liga trophies and three Champions League crowns, was delighted to receive the honour and said: “I had sent a video message earlier for these [COVID-19 front-line] heroes and I am really happy that the situation here is good and under control, and I hope this pandemic will finish in a few months.”

Thanking Dubai Sports Council for the medal, Anelka, who won the 2000 European Championship with France and played for top clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid, said: “This medal means a lot. It means I am part of the family. I love Dubai and my family lives here, and all my friends as well, and I am happy to receive this.”

Speaking about his life in Dubai, Anelka added: “A lot of top sportsmen, who are big names, want to come to Dubai because of the lifestyle, because in this country everything is beautiful and nice, and you have sunshine all the time.

“You know when I speak with people who are my friends and all the sportsmen, they want to come to Dubai because they know this is one of the best cities in the world. You have all the facilities here to be able to do everything. If you want to do tennis, you have everything. If you want to do football, you also have everything. You have everything for everyone. This is the city where you are able to live a beautiful life.”

The ‘Be Fit, Be Safe’ campaign was launched by DSC in March to encourage members of the community to continue exercising at home following the precautionary closure of gyms to combat the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Through the campaign, the council urged members of Dubai’s diverse community to be safe and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary, and support the efforts being made by Dubai’s front-line heroes to curb the spread of the virus. The campaign also urged community members to continue exercising at home and strengthen their immune system, because a healthy body was the best way to beat the virus.

The ‘Be Fit, Be Safe’ initiative received widespread support from the members of the community as well as international sports and football superstars like Anelka, Puyol and greats like Luis Figo of Portugal, Brazil’s Roberto Carlos and Italy’s Gennaro Gattuso.

Barcelona’s Croatian ace Ivan Rakitic, Real Madrid’s French striker Karim Benzema, Borussia Dortmund’s Achraf Hakimi, Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, former Spain international Michel Salgado, and rising Portuguese star Joao Felix also lent their support to the campaign, sending video messages urging members of the community in Dubai to stay fit and stay safe.

As part of the campaign, DSC has also linked up with some of the leading brands from UAE’s fitness industry to offer free daily virtual fitness classes, led by certified fitness trainers. The Council also organised a number of virtual sports events and webinars under the ‘Be Fit, Be Safe’ initiative, including the world’s first ‘Marathon at Home’, and a Virtual Tour Challenge for cycling enthusiasts.

MMA fighters are honoured in Austria for racing through hail of bullets during terror attack

The heroes of Vienna: MMA fighters are honoured in Austria for racing through hail of bullets to carry injured policeman to safety after he was shot by ISIS gunman

Mikail Ozen, 25, and Recep Gultekin are believed to have saved two lives during the horrific terror attack in Vienna last night.

Mr Gultekin even ended up being shot in the calf by the terrorist as he was caught in gunfire while carrying out the rescue mission.

Gunman Kujtim Fejzulai, 22, was armed with an automatic rifle, pistol and machete which he used to kill four people – two men and two women – during his attack on the Austrian capital.

Fejzulai began his attack at 8pm near the central synagogue and marauded through the streets wearing a fake explosives belt and injured 22 as he fired at random before he was ‘neutralised’ – shot dead by police at 8.09pm.

Fejzulai killed an elderly man and woman, a young male passer-by and a waitress.

A 28-year-old police officer was shot but is said to be in a stable condition, while seven civilians who were injured are in a critical, life-threatening condition.

Mr Ozen spoke about his bravery to German publication Bild. He said: ‘We help because we have to.

‘Everyone wants to know if I’m okay.’

Mr Ozen and his friend Mr Gultekin had been going for one last coffee before Austria went into lockdown when they were caught in the fray of a terror attack.

‘The shooter was only a few metres away,’ said Mr Ozen.

Mr Gultekin quickly found an injured woman whom he grabbed and carried out of the line of fire – but ended up with a bullet in his calf.

The pair immediately drove to the nearest police station to describe the perpetrator and his weapon to the officers.

The pair then saw the injured police officer lying motionless on the ground.

Mr Ozen added: ‘We didn’t think about the dangers. We just had to do something. We had to help.’

The pair picked the police officer up together and carried him to the nearest ambulance.

Mr Ozen was left with blood-stained hands.
