Eddie Van Halen’s Son Wolf Remembers His Dad With Sweet Tribute On 66th Birthday: I Miss You So Much It Hurts

Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, paid tribute to his late father with an emotional message on what would have been the guitarist’s 66th birthday on Jan. 26.

Eddie Van Halen‘s grief-stricken son Wolfgang Van Halen, 29, paid tribute to the legendary rockstar on what would have been his dad’s 66th birthday on Jan. 26. The musician took to Instagram to share a few heartwarming throwback videos dated 1994 when Wolf was just 3-years-old.

“Happy 66th Birthday, Pop. I wish I could give you the biggest hug and celebrate it with you. I love and miss you so much it hurts. I don’t even know how to put it into words. I’m doing my best to hold it together, but goddammit it’s really tough being here without you. Not a second has gone by where you haven’t been on my mind, and today will be no different. Love and miss you beyond words, Pop,” Wolf captioned the post along with a red heart emoji.

One clip of the father-son duo was dated Sep. 4 and another he shared from later that year on Christmas Eve. The videos show the incredible bond the two had as Eddie adorably plays with his young son while Wolf tucks himself inside his dad’s T-shirt and pops his head out through the neck. Wolf places his tiny feet on top of Eddie’s as they begin to walk together simultaneously. The other video is a short clip and reveals Eddie showing Wolf his own image in the camera as he says, “There’s Wolfie and daddy,” to which Wolf replies with glee, “Yeah!”

Wolf, who played bass in Van Halen alongside his father and uncle, drummer Alex Van Halen, announced their disbandment shortly after his father’s untimely death on Oct. 6, 2020. After a lengthy battle with throat cancer for 20 years, Wolf, who Eddie shared with his first wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, revealed his feelings of devastation.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” his emotional tweet read. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from the loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

Sammy Hagar on his final phone call with late bandmate Eddie Van Halen: ‘It was a beautiful thing’

Grammy winner Sammy Hagar reconnected with his late, great bandmate Eddie Van Halen before he passed away, age 65, on October 6 following a decade-long battle with cancer.

The 73-year-old singer-guitarist famously replaced Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth from 1985–1996 and then reunited with the rock band from 2003–2005 before Eddie ‘broke my heart.’

After Sammy’s desperate calls to Van Halen’s brother, manager, and friends went unreturned – comedian George Lopez contacted Hagar.

Grammy winner Sammy Hagar (L) reconnected with his late, great bandmate Eddie Van Halen (R) before he passed away, age 65, on October 6 following a decade-long battle with cancer

‘George is a dear friend and he was Eddie’s friend and he said, “Sammy, Eddie’s in bad shape, he loves you brother, you need to reach out,” The Circle frontman told Variety on Saturday.

‘I said, “Give me his f***ing number and I’ll make sure I call him.”‘

The 59-year-old Grammy nominee met the Amsterdam-born, Pasadena-raised guitarist in 2011, and they played golf weekly before Eddie gifted George one of his Frankenstrat guitars in 2016.

‘I said, “Why don’t you respond? I’ve been reaching out,”‘ the Rock & Roll Road Trip host asked Van Halen.

‘And Ed said, “Why didn’t you call me? Don’t f***ing call my brother, f***ing call me!” And I said, “I love you man,” and it was like, boom, we were good. It was a beautiful thing.’

Sammy also confirmed rumors that Van Halen was planning a group reunion tour before the Grammy winner’s health took a turn for the worse.

‘I’ve been pushing for that for 10 years,’ Hagar noted.

‘And put [any differences] aside. Let’s go give the fans the biggest band in the world, you know what I mean? You don’t get bigger than Van Halen, and the fans deserve to see it all, hear every song.’

Eddie Van Halen’s customized 2000 Ferrari 550 and band memorabilia are set to be sold at auction

Eddie Van Halen’s customized 2000 Ferrari 550 is set to be sold at auction for around $250K… six weeks after he died at the age of 65

A wide variety of memorabilia related to the late Eddie Van Halen – who died in early October at the age of 65 – has recently been placed up for auction, including his 2000 Ferrari 500 racing car.

The car is reportedly in good condition, having recently been serviced by a top mechanic and was only driven for 28,000 miles, according to TMZ.

The catalog is set to start being auctioned off on Wednesday and is expected to run to early December; the Ferrari is expected to fetch anywhere from $250,000 to $350,000.

The late songwriter customized the vehicle with a set of racing seats, which were installed for high-speed driving sessions with his brother.

The purchase also comes with a valid registration and renewal, both in Van Halen’s name.

Also being auctioned off are a number of concert posters, used guitar picks, and a handwritten note from the Eruption guitarist himself, among other items.

In a 2016 interview with Car and Driver, the musician spoke about his love for fast cars, and how he saw similarities between racing and performing on stage.

‘The adrenaline rush is similar. You’re always pushing the edge, on stage live and driving on a track. But improvising at the drop of a hat is the biggest thing. There are no do-overs.’

He also spoke about how the lessons that he learned from one of his disciplines actually ended up carrying into another.

‘If you mess up live, you smile your way through it or improvise quick, just like if there’s an accident in front of you or somebody’s trying to pass you.’

Wide selection: The auction will also feature other items related to the guitarist, including a signed CD and record sleeve; he is seen performing in 2015

The Panama songwriter passed away on October 6 after a lengthy battle with throat cancer, among other ailments.

Van Halen was honored at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, where a number of artists including Jack White, Dierks Bentley, and G.E Smith, gave speeches in remembrance of the guitarist.

That same evening, the musician’s son Wolfgang shared a number of photos depicting moments he shared with his father, and hosted a Q&A for fans of the songwriter.

The Pasadena Library, located in Van Halen’s California hometown, recently opened their archives of recordings and images of the guitarist, which were made available to the public.

Jack White Pays Tribute To Late Eddie Van Halen On ‘SNL’ With Special Guitar — Watch

‘SNL’ musical guest Jack White paid tribute to late music legend Eddie Van Halen, who passed away from throat cancer after a 20 year battle on Oct. 6.

Eddie Van Halen will never be forgotten. The incredibly talented guitarist was remembered with by Jack White, 45, on Saturday Night Live Oct. 10. During his first performance, The White Stripes musician placed a blue guitar donning Eddie’s initials and the first name of his son Wolfgang Van Halen,, 29, in the background as he played “Ball and Biscuit” and “Don’t Hurt Yourself.” Jack was a last minute replacement for country crooner Morgan Wallen, 27, who was dropped from the line-up after a maskless partying scandal.

Jack also made note of the tribute on his own Instagram account. “I thought it could be a nice gesture for me to use this blue eddie van halen model guitar for one of the songs tonight on SNL,” he began an Instagram caption on a photo of the guitar, posted on Saturday, Oct. 10. “the guitar was designed by eddie (with a few customizations i had added). eddie was very kind to me and saw to it that this guitar was made for me to my specs. i wont even insult the man’s talent by trying to play one of his songs tonight. thanks again eddie for this guitar and rest in peace sir,” he added.

Notably, Eddie appeared as musical guest on Feb. 28, 1987 when then-wife Valerie Bertinelli, 60, hosted the show. The 65-year-old’s death was sadly confirmed by his son with Valerie, Wolfgang, 28, on social media. “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodeqik Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolfgang tweeted on Oct. 6. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from the loss. I love you so much, Pop,” he added.

Eddie passed away at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica, with his wife Janie, ex-wife Valerie, and sons Wolfgang and Alex, by his side. The star battled throat cancer for 20 years, which he managed to keep out of the public eye for a decade. Like her son, Valerie also posted a deeply emotional tribute to her ex-husband, who she split from in 2007. “40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you,” she began.

“You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang. Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin,” the Hot In Cleveland star continued. “I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life my love,” she concluded her post, shared to Instagram on Oct. 6. Valerie included a sweet black-and-white photo of the couple with then-baby Wolfgang, then just a few months old. “Love you ma,” Wolfgang commented on the post.

Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolf posts endearing photo from his childhood days after Eddie’s death

His father was a rock ‘n’ roll legend who died on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.

And Wolfgang ‘Wolf’ Van Halen was still grieving the loss of his dad on Friday, posting a heartbreakingly sweet black-and-white photo of the father-son pair to his Instagram from when Wolf was just a tot.

In the snap, Eddie, who passed away at the age of 65, is seen holding his son on the couch, reading him a bedtime story.

RIP dad: Wolfgang ‘Wolf’ Van Halen was still grieving the loss of his dad Eddie on Friday, posting a sweet throwback black-and-white photo of the father-son pair to his Instagram

Wolf peers at the camera in the picture, his hair in a boyish bowl cut, while Eddie kisses his cheek.

It was the third such black-and-white, captionless image that Wolf, now 29, posted since his father’s passing, showing the pair at various stations in life – rehearsing together, and also performing on stage together.

The pair were very close, especially since their bond was not only familial – Wolfgang replaced bassist Michael Anthony in his dad’s legendary rock band back in 2007, the same year Van Halen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The younger Van Halen, along with his mother (and Eddie’s ex-wife), Valerie Bertinelli, have shared several nostalgic pics in the wake of Eddie’s death.

On Tuesday, next to a close up photo of Eddie laughing, Wolfgang broke the tragic news on his Instagram:

‘I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,’ he wrote. ‘He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.’

‘My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss,’ the guitarist concluded. ‘I love you so much, Pop.’

Mom Valerie, 60, responded with a comment of a string of broken heart emojis.

For her part, the TV star shared her own flashback photo, showing her and Eddie as young parents, with baby Wolfie cradled in her arms.

’40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you,’ she wrote in the image caption on Tuesday. ‘You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang.

Since the rock legend’s passing, condolences have poured forth from all over the music industry and beyond.

Rock peers such as Aerosmith, Kiss and Motley Crue, among others, gave heartfelt tributes to the fallen musician.

Wolfgang Van Halen Remembers Dad Eddie With Sweet Throwback Photo 3 Days After His Death

Wolfgang Van Halen once again paid tribute to his legendary father, Eddie, three days after the guitarist and songwriter passed away on October 6. See his son’s moving throwback photo.

Wolfgang Van Halen continues to pay tribute to his late father, Eddie Van Halen, following his tragic death at the age of 65 on October 6. In the latest remembrance that Wolfgang, 29, shared to his Instagram account, the bassist simply posted an old photo of himself as a youngster with his doting father by his side.

The black and white image featured Eddie reading a story to his little boy, whom he shared with ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli. As Wolfgang clearly looked away from his father at the flashing camera, his dad did the sweetest thing. Eddie raised his head to give little Wolfgang a kiss on his cheek. The image was completely adorable, and likely brought back fond memories for Wolfgang.

Sadly, Wolfgang’s time with his father came to an end when the founding member of rock band Van Halen passed away following an intense battle with throat cancer. The day of his father’s passing, Wolfgang took to Instagram and shared another black and white image of his father in a candid moment where the camera caught the rock star simply laughing. His caption to the image was completely heartbreaking.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolfgang began the caption to the post. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

As more friends and colleagues learned the news of Eddie’s passing, they shared their own tributes and remembrances. On October 8, Valerie Bertinelli, to whome Eddie was married from 1981-2007 shared a collection of intimate photos and video from their time together. Eddie’s widow, Janie, also mourned the rock star on Twitter, saying, “My heart and soul have been shattered into a million pieces. I never knew it was possible to cry so many tears or feel such incredible sadness. Our journey together has not always been an easy one but in the end and always we have a connection and love that will always be.

“Saying goodbye is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. So instead, I say so long, I will see you again soon in a place with no pain or sorrow. Please watch over Kody and I. We love you and miss you so very much. Love, your PooPee.”

Valerie Bertinelli Reminisces About Eddie Van Halen With Pics Of ‘The Night We 1st Met’ & More

Valerie Bertinelli paid tribute to her late ex-husband, Eddie Van Halen, with personal photos from their relationship, ranging from the moment they met, to as happy parents of their son.

Valerie Bertinelli continued sharing sweet memories of ex-husband Eddie Van Halen on social media, two days after his tragic death from throat cancer. The Hot in Cleveland star, 60, posted a number of beautiful photos from their romance and marriage to her Instagram Stories on October 8, compiled into a slideshow. The 1982 Van Halen song “Cathedral”, which features Eddie’s masterful guitar skills, plays in the backgroun.

The first photo is captioned “the night we met,” and shows an ecstatic, 20-year-old Valerie hugging the rock god in 1980. Valerie’s brothers had begged her to go to a Van Halen show, hoping that her status as the star of One Day at a Time would get them backstage access. Who knew what that fateful day would wind up bringing? The second image shows Valerie chilling with Eddie in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The photo, featuring a goofy Eddie eating M&Ms, was taken in August 1980 — likely on a tour stop. Valerie followed that with a photo of herself cuddling up to her sweetheart on Christmas 1980, just four months before they got married. One year later, she’s backstage again as Van Halen rocks the LA Forum. The newlyweds look ecstatic, cuddling on a couch with the biggest grins on their faces.

She concluded with a photo from 1993, showing that they took their toddler son, Wolfgang Van Halen for a ride on the carousel at Central Park, in New York City. Valerie and Eddie would ultimately split in 2001, finalizing their divorce in 2007. But they remained dedicated co-parents to Wolf — now Van Halen’s bassist — and good friends. They even attended each other’s respective weddings to second wife Janie Van Halen (2009), and second husband Tom Vitale (2011).

Valerie mourned Eddie with a beautiful statement on October 6, sharing a studio photo of herself and Eddie holding baby Wolf. “40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you,” Valerie wrote as the caption. “You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang. Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin. I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life my love.”

A look at guitar icon Eddie Van Halen’s wildest moments

Guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen, who died Tuesday at 65, was an icon for his performances onstage, but his and his band’s antics backstage were epic.

‘Drink a bottle of booze, pop a couple ‘ludes, smoke a joint or two (or ten) and see where the night takes you,’ was the band’s motto, according to their former manager’s 2017 memoir. (The ‘ludes refers to quaaludes.)

In the 1980s, gorgeous women surrounded the band with Monk likening them to Playboy models. Sex backstage was reportedly filmed and one time the band convinced a woman to lie down and let them pour condiments all over her, according to his book. Guacamole and a bowl of peanuts were thrown during an argument between Van Halen and frontman David Lee Roth.

Then there was the time a man won an MTV contest to party with the band in 1984 that included lobster, filet mignon, champagne, cocaine and a woman getting naked to dance with him, the New York Post reported.

Onstage, Van Halen kept lines of coke near an amplifier and had a drug dealer on call who would meet him anywhere to supply him blow, chronicled in Noel Monk’s 2017 book, Runnin’ with the Devil.

After a woman claimed Van Halen was the father of his child and sued him, he reportedly told Monk: ‘You know how I like a pretty face in my crotch.’ Turned out Van Halen wasn’t the father but Roth took it heart, claiming he need ‘paternity insurance’ to protect him from groupies, Monk wrote.

That was the 1980s. In 2001, Van Halen pulled a gun on Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst at his house over equipment, claimed the book, Eruption in the Canyon: 212 Days & Nights With the Genius.

And then there was his marriage to Valerie Bertinelli.

Eddie Van Halen, who died Tuesday at the age of 65 from cancer, was known for his energy and kicks while playing guitar and is seen above performing with frontman David Lee Roth on May 21, 1984 in San Diego, California. The guitar virtuoso kept lines of coke near an amplifier and had a drug dealer on call who would meet him anywhere to supply him blow, according to his former manager’s 2017 book, Runnin’ with the Devil

Van Halen formed the band with his brother, Alex, who played drums, singer David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony in the 1970s. In 1978, the band's self-titled album was released and by the 1980s, they were stars that sold out arenas. To say the band was huge in the 1980s is an understatement. Propelled by the antics of frontman David Lee Roth and hits like Jump, Panama, and Hot for Teacher, the world was at the group's feet. And while Roth was ostentatious, guitarist Eddie Van Halen helped to create the band's singular sound. Above, Roth, left, and Van Halen, right, performing in 1984. ‘Into this vortex of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll walked Valerie Bertinelli. She could not possibly have known what she was getting into; then again, I suppose the same could be said of Edward,’ Monk wrote.

Bertinelli was the star on the sitcom, One Day at a Time, and had been dubbed ‘America’s Sweetheart.’ The couple married not long after they met backstage at one of the band’s performances.

On their wedding day, April 11, 1981, the 21-year-old bride spent part of the celebration, ‘holding her husband’s head over a toilet bowl, pulling his hair back to make sure it didn’t become encrusted with vomit’. Van Halen, then 25, vowed to do better but that didn’t happen, according to Runnin’ with the Devil.

Contrary to her public image, Bertinelli was also using cocaine at one point and that it helped to control her weight, saying: ‘Ed likes me skinny.’ There were plenty of women in the band’s orbit, and Monk wrote that they gave blow jobs to members of crew to get close to the band.

Van Halen cheated on her frequently, and according to Runnin’ with the Devil, made her stay in a separate room so he could play his guitar and do drugs. Some nights he ended up with Monk, acting like a child and ‘suckling vodka instead of milk,’ according to the book.

During the band’s successful 1984 tour, Roth decided to leave and strike out on his own. Van Halen told Monk that the ostentatious Roth drove him nuts.

Sammy Hagar replaced Roth as frontman, and before Van Halen became sober in 2008, he showed up at the vocalist’s house, inebriated and asking him to write a song at 2:30am in the morning.

Van Halen cheated on Bertinelli frequently but they stayed together for over 20 years before divorcing in 2007. Together, they had a son, Wolfgang, in 1990. Van Halen married Janie Liszewski in 2009. Bertinelli and Van Halen remained close and she, his wife Janie were by his side when he died.

Van Halen told Billboard in 2015: ‘I didn’t drink to party. Alcohol and cocaine were private things to me. I would use them for work. The blow keeps you awake and the alcohol lowers your inhibitions. I’m sure there were musical things I would not have attempted were I not in that mental state. You just play by yourself with a tape running, and after about an hour, your mind goes to a place where you’re not thinking about anything.’
