India’s Rank in Global Mobile and Fixed Broadband Speeds Drops: Ookla

India has dropped one rank for both mobile Internet speeds and fixed broadband speeds on Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index in December. The country reached the 129th position for mobile Internet speeds and dropped to 65th for fixed broadband speeds, according to the index. Unlike India, Qatar has seen a two-point growth in December and surpassed South Korea and United Arab Emirates to become the leading country in terms of mobile Internet speeds. Thailand has, on the other hand, overtaken Hong Kong and Singapore to emerge as the top country with the fastest fixed broadband speeds.

Mobile Internet speeds

Average mobile download speed in India has declined over 4.4 percent to 12.91Mbps from 13.51Mbps in November, according to the December 2020 data available on the Speedtest Global Index. However, average mobile upload speed in the country has increased over 1.4 percent to 4.97Mbps from 4.90Mbps. Latency rate in the country hit 51 milliseconds.

The Speedtest Global Index by Ookla shows that Qatar has emerged as the leading country with 178.01Mbps of mobile download speed, followed by the UAE that has an average mobile download speed of 177.52Mbps. The UAE in November led the list of countries with the fastest mobile Internet speed for offering 170.30Mbps of average download speed. South Korea has, on the other front, dropped from second to third with an average mobile download speed of 169.03Mbps.

China and Australia have continued to remain at the fourth and fifth ranks in the global index for mobile Internet speeds, respectively. However, China’s average mobile download speed increased to 155.89Mbps from 148.12Mbps in November, while Australia has seen a decline from 113.16Mbps to 112.68Mbps.

Global average download speed on mobile devices has grown over 3.30 percent to 47.20Mbps in December from 45.69Mbps in November, the index revealed. A slight increase has also been noticed in average mobile upload speed that increased to 12.67Mbps in December from 12.60Mbps. Average latency rate, however, remains the same between December and November – 36 milliseconds.

Fixed broadband speeds

On the part of fixed broadband speeds, India has dropped to 65th position with an average download speed of 53.90Mbps, according to the Speedtest Global Index. The country has also registered 50.75Mbps of average upload speed on fixed broadband. In contrast, average download speed on fixed broadband in India in November was 52.02Mbps, while its average upload speed was 48.57Mbps.

Thailand has gained two spots globally to become the leading country on the fixed broadband index, with 308.35Mbps of average download speed and 260.86Mbps of upload speed in December. Singapore has dropped to second rank with average download and upload speeds of 245.31Mbps and 231.58Mbps, respectively. Hong Kong has declined from second to third with an average download speed of 226.80Mbps and upload speed of 212.26Mbps.

Romania and Switzerland are on the fourth and fifth position with an average download speed of 190.60Mbps and 188.88Mbps, respectively.

Ookla’s index shows that the global average download speed on fixed broadband increased to 96.43Mbps in December from 91.96Mbps in November. Similarly, average upload speed on fixed broadband has increased to 52.31Mbps from 49.44Mbps. Global average latency rate remains the same at 21 milliseconds.

Facebook Drops Like Button From Public Pages

Facebook has dropped the like button from its redesigned public pages used by artists, public figures and brands, the social media company said on Wednesday.

Facebook pages will only show followers and have a dedicated News Feed where users can join conversations, interact with peers, and engage with fans, the company said in a blog post. The new redesign has started rolling out on January 6.

“We are removing Likes and focusing on Followers to simplify the way people connect with their favourite Pages,” Facebook said about the redesign.

The notable changes include a redesigned layout, News Feed, easy navigation, updated task-based admin controls, actionable insights, and safety features.

Users can now navigate between personal profile and pages quickly. With the new admin controls, users can choose to give trusted page admins full control or partial access. “You’ll now be able to grant varying levels of access to manage specific tasks including Insights, Ads, Content, and Community Activity & Messages. This will also ensure account safety and integrity,” Facebook said in the blog.

The new safety features will ensure proper detection of spams and impersonator accounts.

The dedicated News Feed will also show and suggest new connections that include other public figures, pages, groups, and trending content. Comments from public figures will also be bumped up to the top. Users will be able to follow pages directly from comments and recommendation posts, the company said.

Facebook said that more experiences for pages will roll out in the coming months as well.

Junior Team Canada drops gold against Americans

The 19e Canada’s gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship will have to wait. Facing their best opposition – by far – since the start of the competition, ECJ had to admit defeat to the United States 2-0 yesterday in the grand final of the event.

• Read also: Defeat of Canada: “It makes you sweat!”

• Read also: World Junior Championship: Finland wins bronze

This is the fourth straight final between the two countries which ends in the advantage of the United States, after those of 2004, 2010 and 2017. The last time Canada defeated the Americans in the game for the gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship, it was in 1997, during the tournament presented in Geneva and Morges, Switzerland.

  • Listen to Jean-François Baril’s sports and society column on QUB radio:

ZEGRAS TALKS … AND ANSWERS

America’s star forward Trevor Zegras had set the table ahead of the game. Speaking to the NHL Network, minutes before the start of the game, he mentioned that Canada had “not been tested by a real team yet in this tournament.” We’re playing at full speed right now and we’re going to take them by surprise. ”

We have to admit he was right as the American team came in hungry in the first period, giving Canada their first real opposition since the start of the competition.

After buzzing for several minutes on Canadian soil, the team led by Nate Leaman handed Team Canada Junior their first power-tied goal when Alex Turcotte deflected defenseman Drew’s shot.
Helleson behind Devon Levi.

We can certainly not blame Zegras for not going from words to deeds since after only 32 seconds in the second period, the striker recovered a free puck to the right of Levi when the latter believed that she was heading to the other side, to thread the needle and do 2 to 0.

The sequel was a rolling fire for the Americans, who took complete control of the game, serving the medicine Canada had served just about all of their opponents before the final game.

Ironically, it was a penalty kill in the mid-second period that gave the Canadian team a boost, which had packed them so far. Coming up to three on two, Bowen Byram accepted Dylan Cozens’s pass before hitting the post to the left of a Spencer Knight he had beaten.

SOLID KNIGHT

André Tourigny’s troupe subsequently regained strength, making change in the United States, but came up against an intractable Knight. And the American goaltender was there until the end, ending his night with 34 saves. With two points, Zegras secured the scoring championship of the competition with an impressive 18 points in seven games.

He was named tournament MVP.

“We had a great start. The guys arrived at the arena relaxed and they had been all day. We didn’t want to overwhelm them with information during the day to make them too nervous. I think the second goal (Zegras’s) was the turning point of the game, ”said US coach Nate Leaman, smiling.

BETWEEN DECEPTION AND PRIDE

On the other side, it was obviously less happy. With red eyes with emotion, Canadian head coach André Tourigny admitted that his team had experienced a slump at the end of the first period and the start of the second.

“They scored more goals than us but I’m not sure they played better. We did less well for 10 or 12 minutes but for the rest, I’m proud of how we played. Either way, two good countries faced off in a gold medal game. It was close and the United States capitalized on a deflected shot and a rebound behind the goal. We weren’t able to score those goals. ”

According to Tourigny, ECJ 2021 was “one of the groups, if not the most united group I have had with Hockey Canada”.

“Short-term competition is never the same as a team fighting for one, two or three years together. But when you’ve been together for 50 days, it starts to look the same. There are still 7 or 8 players who have not started to undress in the bedroom. It’s very emotional, it’s hard to accept and see how our guys took this to heart and it didn’t turn out on our side, “he said.

IN SHORT

Two Quebec officials were in charge for yesterday’s final match: head referee Olivier Gouin and linesman Jonathan Deschamps. It was Gouin who had the honor of making the first face-off of the match.

“Guys, here we are, have fun!” We heard him say before putting the puck on the ice.

Of the 14 officials assigned to the World Junior Championship, Gouin was the one who was used the most, working in six games.

Finland’s Topi Niemela was named the tournament’s best defender while Germany’s Tim Stützle received the honor in forwards.

Fumble! Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz drops and shatters crystal trophy during locker room celebration

Fumble! Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz drops and shatters crystal trophy during locker room celebration after beating Wake Forest in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl as coach Paul Chryst jokes he ‘wanted everybody to have a piece’

  • Wisconsin beat Wake Forest, 42-28, on Wednesday in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl
  • During the locker room celebration, Badgers QB Graham Mertz was dancing with the trophy when its football-shaped crystal became detached from the base
  • The Lenox crystal football fell to the locker room floor and shattered everywhere
  • Afterwards coach Paul Chryst joked that he ‘wanted everybody to have a piece’
  • One player said he believes the Duke’s Mayo Bowl trophy will be replaced

The Wisconsin Badgers captured the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and its accompanying crystal trophy – and then they promptly broke it.

While dancing around to celebrate his team’s 42-28 victory over Wake Forest on Wednesday, quarterback Graham Mertz dropped the football-shaped piece of Lenox crystal, leaving it shattered on the floor of the locker room.

‘We just wanted everybody to have a piece of that trophy,’ Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst joked.

Afterwards Mertz (pictured) revealed that he suffered a cut on the trophy, but vowed never to make the same mistake again. 'My mama would call it a boo-boo, but it's all right, we'll bounce back,' he said. 'It'll be the last trophy I ever drop, I guarantee you that'

Afterwards, during a video call with reporters, Mertz revealed that he suffered a cut on the trophy, but vowed never to make the same mistake again.

‘My mama would call it a boo-boo, but it’s all right, we’ll bounce back,’ he said. ‘It’ll be the last trophy I ever drop, I guarantee you that.’

Mertz accounted for three touchdowns and Wisconsin turned four second-half interceptions, all by different players, into 21 points to turn a close game into a near-rout of the Demon Deacons.

The redshirt freshman threw for 130 yards and ran for two short TDs as Wisconsin (4-3) finished a rocky 2020 season on a high note.

But the post-game talk centered around his memorable fumble.

‘Yeah, I dropped it,’ Mertz said sheepishly. ‘That’s on me. It happened.’

Mertz did offer a solution on top of his apology by taping a plastic bottle of Duke’s Mayo atop the trophy, where the football-shaped Lenox crystal once sat.

Reports of the broken trophy began to seep onto social media in the hours after Wednesday’s win.

‘There’s video proof out there who broke the trophy, and I’m not going to say anything else regarding that,’ joked linebacker Noah Burks, whose interception helped Wisconsin pull off Wednesday’s win.

As Burks and others explained, the trophy wasn’t necessarily dropped; rather, the top crystal become detached and fell to the floor, shattering everywhere.

‘I actually was talking to coach [Jim] Leonhard when that happened, so I will remove myself from that conversation, but like Noah said, there is some video proof of what happened,’ Safety Scott Nelson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

‘Apparently, we’re getting a new one,’ Nelson continued. ‘I don’t know if that’s a secret; I’m sorry if it is. But I think Graham got a little too excited and thought he could dance a little bit. I try to stay in my lane. I’m not much of a dancer. No good things happen when I dance.’

With 2,183 new contaminations in 24 hours, in addition to 28 deaths, the Belle Province announced its worst toll since the start of the pandemic, barely three days before Christmas.

Faced with this distressing observation, the four parties represented in the National Assembly even felt the need to make a joint outing to implore Quebeckers to respect health standards.

By comparison, across the country, British Columbia posted its best record in a month with 444 cases and 12 deaths.

These encouraging numbers in a province that peaked at 1,008 cases on November 29 were released the same day the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Bonnie Henry, received Pfizer / BioNTech’s COVID vaccine. 19.

The Prairie provinces have also seen their respective curves continue to decline, with 1,021 cases in Alberta, 181 in Saskatchewan and 155 in Manitoba. Taken together, they also reported 32 deaths.

Ontario, for its part, remained above the 2,000 daily case mark with 2,202 infections and 21 deaths.

Finally, in the Atlantic, barely 10 cases have been identified, mainly in Nova Scotia where seven positive tests have been announced.

Tesla stock drops for a SECOND straight day as analyst says it is in bubble territory

Tesla stock was down again in morning trading on Tuesday, following claims the shares are overpriced and amid new reports that Apple’s self-driving car program is back on track.

Tesla shares dropped as much as 2.2 percent on Tuesday morning, after plunging 7 percent in Monday’s session, when the company became part of the S&P 500 index.

‘Tesla stock has very strong signs of being overpriced,’ said Vitali Kalesnik, partner and head of research in Europe at Research Affiliates, in an interview on CNBC on Tuesday. ‘Tesla’s current valuation is in the bubble territory.’

His remarks followed a new report that Apple is moving forward with self-driving car technology and is targeting 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology, posing a new threat to Tesla.

The iPhone maker’s automotive efforts, known as Project Titan, have proceeded unevenly since 2014 when it first started to design its own vehicle from scratch.

At one point, Apple drew back the effort to focus on software and reassessed its goals. Doug Field, an Apple veteran who had worked at Tesla Inc , returned to oversee the project in 2018 and laid off 190 people from the team in 2019.

Since then, Apple has progressed enough that it now aims to build a vehicle for consumers, two people familiar with the effort said, asking not to be named because Apple’s plans are not public.

Apple’s goal of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts with rivals such as Google-parent Alphabet’s Waymo, which has built robo-taxis to carry passengers for a driverless ride-hailing service.

Central to Apple’s strategy is a new battery design that could ‘radically’ reduce the cost of batteries and increase the vehicle’s range, according to a third person who has seen Apple’s battery design.

Apple declined to comment on its plans or future products.

Making a vehicle represents a supply chain challenge even for Apple, a company with deep pockets that makes hundreds of millions of electronics products each year with parts from around the world, but has never made a car.

Apple shares jumped following the report that the company's car project is back on

Apple shares jumped following the report that the company’s car project is back on

It took Elon Musk’s Tesla 17 years before it finally turned a sustained profit making cars.

‘If there is one company on the planet that has the resources to do that, it’s probably Apple. But at the same time, it’s not a cellphone,’ said a person who worked on Project Titan.

It remains unclear who would assemble an Apple-branded car, but sources have said they expect the company to rely on a manufacturing partner to build vehicles.

There is also still a chance Apple will decide to reduce the scope of its efforts to an autonomous driving system that would be integrated with a car made by a traditional automaker, rather than the iPhone maker selling an Apple-branded car, one of the people added.

Two people with knowledge of Apple’s plans warned pandemic-related delays could push the start of production into 2025 or beyond.

Shares of Tesla ended 6.5 percent lower on Monday after their debut in the S&P 500 on Monday. Apple shares ended 1.24 percent higher after the news.

Apple has decided to tap outside partners for elements of the system, including lidar sensors, which help self-driving cars get a three-dimensional view of the road, two people familiar with the company’s plans said.

Apple’s car might feature multiple lidar sensors for scanning different distances, another person said. Some sensors could be derived from Apple’s internally developed lidar units, that person said. Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro models released this year both feature lidar sensors.

Apple's Project Titan has progressed enough that it now aims to build a vehicle for consumers, two people familiar with the effort said

Apple’s Project Titan has progressed enough that it now aims to build a vehicle for consumers, two people familiar with the effort said

Reuters had previously reported that Apple had held talks with potential lidar suppliers, but it was also examining building its own sensor.

As for the car’s battery, Apple plans to use a unique ‘monocell’ design that bulks up the individual cells in the battery and frees up space inside the battery pack by eliminating pouches and modules that hold battery materials, one of the people said.

Apple’s design means that more active material can be packed inside the battery, giving the car a potentially longer range. Apple is also examining a chemistry for the battery called LFP, or lithium iron phosphate, the person said, which is inherently less likely to overheat and is thus safer than other types of lithium-ion batteries.

‘It’s next level,’ the person said of Apple’s battery technology. ‘Like the first time you saw the iPhone.’

Apple had previously engaged Magna International Inc in talks about manufacturing a car, but the talks petered out as Apple’s plans became unclear, a person familiar with those previous efforts said. Magna did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

To turn a profit, automotive contract manufacturers often ask for volumes that could pose a challenge even to Apple, which would be a newcomer to the automotive market.

‘In order to have a viable assembly plant, you need 100,000 vehicles annually, with more volume to come,’ the person said.

Some Apple investors reacted to the Reuters report on the company’s plans with caution. Trip Miller, managing partner at Apple investor Gullane Capital Partners, said it could be tough for Apple to produce large volumes of cars out of the gate.

‘It would seem to me that if Apple develops some advanced operating system or battery technology, it would be best utilized in a partnership with an existing manufacturer under license,’ Miller said. ‘As we see with Tesla and the legacy auto companies, having a very complex manufacturing network around the globe doesn’t happen overnight.’

Hal Eddins, chief economist at Apple shareholder Capital Investment Counsel, said Apple has a history of higher margins than most automakers.

‘My initial reaction as a shareholder is, huh?’ Eddins said. ‘Still don´t really see the appeal of the car business, but Apple may be eyeing another angle than what I´m seeing.’

Alex Moffat Debuts As Joe Biden On ‘SNL’ While ‘Mike Pence’ Mistakenly Drops Trousers To Get COVID Vaccine

Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris and Kate McKinnon’s Rudy Giuliani also made their returns to the cold open, hours after Jim Carrey confirmed he won’t be returning as Biden.

Alex Moffat, 36, has taken over the role of President-elect Joe Biden, 78. The Saturday Night Live cast member played Joe just hours after Jim Carrey, 58, confirmed he wrapped his stint for the season. Alex’s Joe appeared several minutes into the hilarious cold open, which opened with VP ‘Mike Pence‘ played by Beck Bennett ready to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Pence rocked a short sleeve shirt, he claimed, to show off his bulging muscles. While it appeared he wore the shirt for the vaccine, Beck’s VP was seemingly confused as he went to remove his trousers presumably for a shot back there.

Alex Moffat took over the role of Joe Biden on the Dec. 19 episode of ‘SNL. (NBC)

“Before we begin, I just want to assure the American people that the vaccine is safe and harmless. Which is why Donald Trump refused to be here…he sent me to be his…,” he trailed off, as the nurse finished his sentence. “Human shield?” the nurse enquired, prompting SNL‘s Biden to note, “That’s exactly what he sent me.” He went on, “You probably noticed I’m wearing short sleeves — I’ve been lifting weights in my driveway like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty.” Maya Rudolph‘s Kamala Harris then returned, explaining she was allowed into the White House because she “got more votes.”

“I guess you and Joe will be in here soon IF those election results work out!” Beck’s Pence went on, as Alex then made his unexpected debut. “You look different somehow?” someone on stage inquired, taking a jab at the recast. “I’m like Colonel Sanders. A different guy every time!” Alex’s Joe reasoned, making reference Mario Lopez’s recent KFC film on Lifetime. “You’re about to have a real leader again. The most diverse cabinet in the history of American politics,” he added. Of course, the sketch wouldn’t be complete without a quick appearance by Kate McKinnon‘s Rudy Giuliani, who once again gave an excuse for having his hands down his pants.

Earlier today, Jim Carrey confirmed he wouldn’t be reprising his role as Joe Biden via Twitter. “Though my term was only meant to be 6 weeks,I was thrilled to be elected as your SNL President…comedy’s highest call of duty,” the Canadian born star posted on Dec. 19. “I would love to go forward knowing that Biden was the victor because I nailed that shit. But I am just one in a long line of proud, fighting SNL Bidens!” he added.

A source confirmed to us hours later that the show “loved” Jim’s Joe but knew it was only going to be for a short run. “Season 46 is now looking for their new 46. Lorne and the producers loved Jim Carrey in the role of Joe Biden and always expected that they were only going to have him for a limited time,” a source EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife. “Lorne has been looking to see if they could get another big-name celeb to take on the role but with Covid restrictions that has become much harder than originally expected,” they added.

Our insider went on to name some likely replacements, including Alex. “So to get someone from the current cast to do it is now the next best option,” the source continued. “Beck Bennett is in the driver’s seat to get the part as he has been practicing being Biden. They have also considered Alex Moffat and Mikey Day to do it, but Beck is the frontrunner,” they added.
