Festive Bollywood releases deck up 2021: John Abraham, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn set eyes on festivals for their films

The year 2020 has gone by in a flash, and the movie business has been impacted massively. While theatres still remain closed and there’s no status on when they will reopen, 2021 looks like a festival — literally. All biggies from this year have neatly taken over the festive slots next year. John Abraham will come out with the sequel to Satyameva Jayate on Eid, while Aamir Khan pushed his Laal Singh Chadha to Christmas from this year.

This year itself, makers of both Sooryavanshi and ‘83 have locked Diwali and Christmas weekends respectively.

How important are festive releases to the film industry? Shibasish Sarkar, CEO, Reliance Entertainment, explains both Bollywood and Hollywood have been after these specific release dates. “If you see, Hollywood makes announcements for Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, whenever there’s a big film, there’s a pattern. In India, that pattern is becoming more pronounced in coming days. People try to see the producers’ point of view. Currently, producers are planning on announcing films and making those subsequently. But we have to see how the whole year goes by. Even in the past you will find people who did that,” he says.

He says the industry people are living in “optimism” right now. “We are assuming by that point of time theatres will open up, and by Unlock 5, it will be announced if they are a part of that or not,” adds Sarkar.

Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, meanwhile, has it’s eyes set on Independence Day. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “Even while growing up, and when I started out in the 1980s, certain dates were always important, like August 15, Gandhi Jayanti, and of course festivals such as Diwali, Eid, Christmas. They were always very important for filmmakers even then. I distinctly remember big films releasing around festivals in those days, but there was no social media to highlight it. Now we have people announcing dates before they start shooting the film! Those dates are important. One, it is a holiday period, and people are in the moot to spend, splurge. And on these holidays, big films are always a bonus.”

For a filmmaker’s point of view, we talk to Remo D’Souza, who helmed Salman Khan’s 2018 Eid offering, Race 3. He agrees that makers and actors both try for a festive release. “They are very important for a film. You get holidays, and a proper release, people are free to come and watch the film. Makers do make it a point to aim for a festival release, and every star has their own festival booked, and they make sure it is for them,” he says.

Considering the year so far has been a damp squib for films, he maintains that festive releases next year will be “critical”. Echoing exactly the same sentiment is exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, who says that the exhibition sector faced major blows in 2020.

He says festive releases are important, “these big films have big stars more often than not, and festivals help them maximise their business. Considering how this year has been, we need a slew of blockbusters for the losses, for the survival of the exhibition sector. I really hope all top directors and actors do what it takes to maximise releases. 2021 will determine the volume of exhibition sector.”

Mona Singh: Some are trying to do newer things, but TV has this herd mentality, if one show works everybody starts copying

Many actors, who started their careers with TV and eventually forayed into films, have spoken about how the difficulties they faced during this transition. Mona Singh, who rose to fame with her debut TV show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, and made her film debut with 3 Idiots (2009), says at a time when so many TV actors are doing films, she fails to understand why TV actors are still looked down upon.

“I’ve always been so busy doing TV that I didn’t even hire a manager to get me into films. It just happened organically. While working for 3 Idiots, I remember Aamir (Khan) sir coming up to me and saying, ‘Oh, JJKN was such a big show, we all know about it, congratulations!’ That was such a big thing coming from a superstar like him, he was so humble and gracious,” says Singh.

Stating that good work is always recognised, the actor adds, “I don’t know why people still look down upon TV actors. May be because of the regressive content of some TV shows in present times. Back in the 90s and early 2000, it was brilliant. Every show was talked about.”

There have been talks around how content on the small screen needs to be upgraded and be more progressive. On this, Singh says some in the industry are trying to make something new and create history. “But, TV has this herd mentality that if one show works, everybody starts to copy that. At the same time, there are some nice shows happening too,” she opines.

The actor, however, says it can’t be denied that TV remains one of the biggest platforms.

“In fact, every movie star now goes to TV to promote their films because they’re well aware about its reach. I think whether you’re on stage or TV or films or web, you’re still acting, right? Good work is always recognised,” she shares.

Personally, Singh has never taken up TV shows that she can‘t relate to and has always preferred quality over quantity.

“JJKN changed my whole perspective. I may not know what I want, but I definitely know what I don’t want to do. In between, I did get a few good TV offers but couldn’t take them up given my web and film commitments. So, I’m not saying no to TV,” says the actor, who’s simultaneously shooting for web series, the Indian version of Black Widows, and Laal Singh Chadha, an adaptation of Hollywood film, Forrest Gump.

For someone like her, who has mostly played lead on TV, Singh has no qualms about doing smaller characters in films.

“I only think about the character I’m playing, and how good the character has been written. TV has a mass viewership and have mostly female-fronted narratives, but when it comes to films it’s all about creating a story within one to one-and-a-half hours, so whether it’s a lead role or not doesn’t matter,” she concludes.

Bollywood’s reboot plans 2.0: Kartik Aaryan, Rajkummar Rao gear up to start work!

After over six months of total shutdown, Bollywood is finally getting back to work. Vis-a-vis Hindi film shoots, top names such as Aamir Khan (he apparently shot for Laal Singh Chaddha a few days ago, in Turkey), Akshay Kumar (he is currently shooting in the UK for Bell Bottom) and Deepika Padukone (she is in Goa for Shakun Batra’s next, co-starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday) have already hit the floors.

Now, we have learnt that stars such as Kartik Aaryan, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani are ready to face the camera, from next month onwards. While Aaryan, along with Advani, will restart work on Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Rao and Sanon are slated to kick off work on Second Innings.

“Yes, we are starting with a nearly 15-day long schedule in Mumbai,” confirms Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 director, Anees Bazmee, adding: “Initially, we had planned to go back to Lucknow to restart the film’s shoot but now, we are going ahead with Mumbai portions first, on sets. We’ll travel to Lucknow later at an opportune time.”

Rao, along with Sanon, is also set to start work around mid-October, in Mumbai itself. Apparently, makers are leaving no stone unturned with regards to Covid-19 induced safety / hygiene guidelines. “It’s a beautiful, fun story, and so, I’m really looking forward to it,” says Rao, who last shot for The White Tiger, back in December 2019.

Besides, John Abraham is likely to start work on Satyameva Jayate 2, in Lucknow, either sometime this month or around the start of October. Also, Bhumi Pednekar will reportedly restart shooting for her next, Durgavati next month, while Vidya Balan is likely to start work on Sherni, around Diwali. Plus, Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor will apparently face the camera together, sometime in November, for filmmaker Luv Ranjan’s next.

Aamir Khan’s brother Faisal on legal battle with family: ‘They kept me under house arrest for a year, gave me forceful medication’

Aamir Khan’s younger brother, Faisal Khan, has opened up about his legal battle with his family in 2007-08. In a new interview, he alleged that he was kept under house arrest by his family and forcefully given medication, as they thought that he was unwell.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Faisal said, “When the family felt that I was depressed and had paranoid schizophrenia, they kept me under house arrest for one year and gave me forceful medication. It is illegal but I was taking all this quietly because I thought that the family will realise at some point, that if I am mad, I will show it in some way. I thought I should be patient till they come to their senses that they are troubling me for no reason.”

However, when Faisal was asked by his family to give up his signatory rights, he decided to ‘safeguard’ himself and left the house. He fought them in court and after several months, the Bandra metropolitan magistrate’s court ruled that he need not be in anyone’s custody and can live anywhere he wants to.

Faisal said that he underwent a mental evaluation at JJ Hospital for 20 days, after which he was declared of sound mind and mentally healthy. “I was given wrong medication for one year, which was very unfair on the family’s part,” he said.

In an interview with Hindustan Times in 2008, after the court’s verdict, Faisal had claimed that his family had spread rumours about his mental illness. “Frankly, I was never ill.. what has been said so far was speculative and spread by my elder brother Aamir Khan and other family members. In fact, I was kidnapped.. I was under house arrest, unwanted drugs were given to me. On the judgment day, judge saab announced that I’m not suffering from any illness.. and that I’m normal and capable of handling life on my own. I should be treated as a normal person,” he had said.

Faisal, like Aamir, is an actor and has starred in films such as Madhosh, Mela, Border Hindustan Ka and Chand Bujh Gaya.

Teacher’s Day 2020: From Aamir Khan to Amitabh Bachchan, these teachers will forever stay in our hearts

A great teacher can mend even a broken soul. The bond between a student and teacher is among the most precious relationships in this world. They guide us, lift us up when even we don’t believe in our worth and show us that anything is possible.

This Teacher’s Day, we are bringing you the five most iconic teachers in Hindi cinema who gave us valuable life lessons and a films that we will cherish for years to come.

Hichki (2018)

Hindustantimes

A desi adaptation of Brad Cohen’s autobiography, Front of the Class, the film follows a teacher (played Rani Mukerji) with Tourette syndrome who lands a job in an elite school. It shows her journey of how she turns her weakness into her biggest strength. At first, Rani’s students are unwilling to accept her and other students who belong to the economically weaker section of the society. But she makes it her job not just to teach them from textbooks but also from her heart. She makes empathetic, confident students out of them through her dedication and never-say-die spirit.

Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Hindustantimes

This Aamir Khan movie is one big tearjerker. The film, directed by Aamir, follows the story of one Ishaan Awasthi. This young boy is the class clown and nothing but trouble for his parents. He is also dyslexic, which makes school nothing short of hell for him, When no one understands him and his challenges, Aamir enters his life as an art teacher and turns it completely around. He gives him self confidence, and a reason to smile again.

Mohabbatein (2000)

Hindustantimes

This Shah Rukh Khan-starrer showed how learning to live life with love is the most important lesson of all. Shah Rukh played a music teacher who applies for job at a boarding school run by Amitabh Bachchan, with discipline as its cornerstone. He teaches his students to fall in love, take risks and follow their hearts, even if it means breaking a few rules. With him, not only his students but even the cold-hearted principal learns to truly appreciate the need for love and friendship.

Super 30 (2019)

Hindustantimes

Hrithik Roshan had the role of a lifetime in this Anand Kumar biopic. It shows the real-life story of Anand, a mathematician who quit his job in a top coaching centre to teach underprivileged children. It shows him go through all the hardships to teach his students, enabling them to bag a seat at the coveted IITs.

Black (2005)

Hindustantimes

Loosely based on Helen Keller’s life and struggle, Black follows a teacher played by Amitabh Bachchan helping a visually and speech impaired girl (essayed by Rani Mukerji) explore her potential. Later in the film, the teacher develops Alzheimer’s disease and it’s his students who decides to be by his side in his twilight years. The film shows how a teacher shapes the life of a girl when even her family had given up on her.

Aamir Khan mourns the death of his Marathi teacher Suhas Limaye: ‘You have been one of my best teachers’

Actor Aamir Khan took to Twitter to express his grief at the passing away of his Marathi teacher. The actor fondly recalled the four years they spent together.

He wrote: “I am deeply saddened to hear that my Marathi Sir Mr Suhas Limaye passed away yesterday. Sir, you have been one of my best teachers. I have enjoyed every moment that I spent with you. Your curiosity, and your desire to learn and share, is what made you the fantastic teacher that you have always been. The 4 years we spent together have been most memorable. Every moment that we have spent together is etched in my memory. You taught me not just Marathi, but about so many other things too. Thank you. You will be surely missed, Sir. My heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Through much of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, Aamir has maintained a low profile. In June this year, several members of his staff had tested positive to coronavirus. The actor had tweeted to say: “This is to inform you that some of my staff have tested positive. They were immediately quarantined, and BMC officials were very prompt and efficient in taking them to a medical facility. I would like to thank the BMC for taking such good care of them, and for fumigating and sterilising the entire society.”

He had also talked about his concern for his mother, who was to be tested as well. He had continued, “The rest of us have all been tested and found negative. Right now I am taking my mother to get her tested. She is the last person in the loop. Please pray that she is negative.”

On July 1, however, the actor had confirmed to say that his mother too had tested negative to the deadly virus. He had said via a tweet: “Hello everyone, I am most relieved to inform everyone that Ammi is Covid 19 negative. Thank you everyone for your prayers and good wishes.”

Before the lockdown came into place, Aamir had been busy shooting for his next film, Laal Singh Chaddha. The shoot had taken him to Punjab, Manali and Rajasthan. Actor Kareena Kapoor, who is the female lead in the film, had accompanied him for the Punjab shoot. The film is the official Hindi remake of Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks. The film is being directed by Advait Chandan, known for his film Secret Superstar, which was an Aamir Khan production.

In 2016, Aamir Khan had addressed same fake interview shared by Kangana Ranaut, here’s what he had said

Earlier last week, Kangana Ranaut had shared an ‘interview’ of Aamir Khan, accusing him of ‘kattarpanthi’ (extremist religious views). Later, the interview was proven to be fake.

In the fake interview, Aamir was shown to be saying that even though he is a Muslim and his wife (filmmaker Kiran Rao) a Hindu, their children will only be brought up with Islamic culture and traditions. Sharing it, Kangana had tweeted that ‘outcome of a marriage is not just a blend of genes and cultures but even religions’, asking the actor to teach his children ‘Allah ki ebadat bhi seekhayein aur Shri Krishn ki Bhakti bhi’.

In another tweeet, she asked when did Aamir become ‘so intolerant’.

Also see | Khaali Peeli teaser: Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday are on the run in this action-packed thriller, watch

However, the interview was a complete fake. Back in 2016 itself, Aamir had said in an interview with Rajat Sharma that he had filed an FIR against the same. Aamir said he had been watching a conspiracy unfolding against him since a long time. “I could see that people were being provoked against me. There was a weird interview in which I am shown to be saying that ‘I am a Muslim, my kids will be Muslims, so what if my wife is a Hindu’. These weird interviews that were supposed to be mine, were going viral in the media. My pictures were being shared that I am mingling with terrorists. So such rumours were being spread about me,” he said. Aamir, therefore, filed a complaint with the police who caught two men in relation to the case. One was the one who created the fake video and the other was arrested for spreading it on internet.

Kangana, however, has still not deleted her tweet.
