Klopp explains anger towards Liverpool bench after Christensen red card

Jurgen Klopp attempted to play down an incident which saw him berate a member of his backroom staff for their reaction after Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen was sent off in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

With the scores level at 0-0 heading towards the end of the first-half, Blues centre-back Christensen hauled down Sadio Mane as he ran on to a Jordan Henderson through ball.

The Dane was initially shown a yellow card by referee Paul Tierney.

But after he was advised by VAR to check the pitch-side monitor he changed it to a red, with Christensen adjudged to have denied Mane a clear goalscoring opportunity.

After the decision was changed, an unidentified member of staff in Liverpool colours reacted with joy on the bench, but were swiftly told to wind it in by Klopp.  

Klopp turned round from the touch line and shouted back at his bench: “Are you crazy? We never ever do that, OK?”’

Speaking about the incident after the game, Klopp said it was not a player who he was angry at – but refused to provide any further details.

“It was not one of my subs, it was another member of staff,” he said.

“And I told him already what I thought about it and I am fine with that. But in the moment, it is not something I want to speak of.”

Two second-half Sadio Mane goals made it two wins out of two in the Premier League for Liverpool, but Klopp singled out another of his players for praise for the way he dealt with the threat of Chelsea’s Timo Werner.

“Timo is a top player,” Klopp added. “With space [behind the defence]…there’s no tactic which can defend him when he has the ball, but Fabinho is outstanding, a really good challenger.

“Today he enjoyed it a lot. If Sadio doesn’t score two goals then a man of the match contender is Fab.”
