CES 2020 Day 1: Smart toothbrush, big TVs and sleek laptops are the highlights
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 has begun in Las Vegas and if you have been active on the web, you may have already seen a couple of announcements making headlines. If now, then you are reading the right piece. The first day of the CES has concluded and several companies have come up with some of the weirdest yet exciting stuff CES is known for. From a rotating TV to sleek laptops to, wait for it, a smart toothbrush (yes, that’s apparently a norm now at the CES every year), this year’s CES has got everything.
On day 1, a lot of the big names took to the stage to show off their prized creations. HP, Dell and Lenovo were happy to unveil a bunch of sleek Windows ultrabooks with the latest Intel processors and some quirky features. Samsung surprised everyone with its Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite but the Korean brand also came up with its weird rotating TV. For fashion lovers, LÓreal has a new gadget for mixing makeup material.
Have these got you interested? Here’s something about the most prominent ones in brief.
Best of CES 2020 Day 1:
Samsung Galaxy Lite smartphones
Even though Samsung announced it globally last weekend, the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite are part of Samsung’s CES presentation. Both the phones are more affordable variants of the mainstream S and Note series phones. With new cameras and a Snapdragon 855 chip, the S10 Lite is a powerful alternative to the Galaxy S10e. The Note 10 Lite will be an affordable alternative to the Note 10, complete with the S Pen. Prices and availability are yet to be announced.
Samsung Sero rotating TV
Samsung loves experimenting with its TVs and the Sero is the latest one built for the Instagram generation. The Sero is a 43-inch 4K QLED TV that comes with a special rotating stand. Why? So that when you want to stream your Instagram or Snapchat stories on the TV, the TV will be aligned vertically to prevent those ugly black bars to the sides. The rotation happens automatically and if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you can tap on it to start streaming automatically.
LÓreal’s mixing expert Perso
LÓreal is part of the CES this year (Yes, the same brand that makes cosmetics) and it has come up with the Perso. It’s a gadget that specialises in mixing cosmetic items, especially mixing foundation, lipstick and skincare. What’s special, you wonder? The gadget uses AI and face tracking to analyse your facial details and customise the make-up. You can even go for shades that are trending globally. You will have to buy refills of colours though and a small mirror will let you apply it. It’s coming in 2021.
A couple of smart toothbrushes
Smart toothbrushes are still around and this year, they are using AI to help you get your mouth washed. Oral-B has one called the iO and it uses AI to wash the mouth. A magnetic drive is included to help with 16 zones of the mouth. It has seven brushing modes and lasts up to 12 days on a single charge. The Colgate Plaqless Pro Toothbrush is meant to clear plaque formation and bacterial layers on the teeth but no information about how it does that has been released yet.
Asus goes bonkers with its gaming display
Last year, Asus made an April Fools prank with a 360Hz refresh rate monitor but this year, they have made it a reality. For gamers, the Asus ROG Swift is a 24.5-inch gaming monitor with 1080p resolution and- wait for it- a refresh rate of 360Hz. Hence, if you love extremely smooth visuals, the ROG Swift is the display to go for this year. Do note that you need to have a compatible GPU for supporting the high refresh rate.
Laptops get sleeker
CES 2020 saw a couple of premium ultrabooks from the big players of the industry. Dell was the first one to announce the new XPS 13 laptop with tiny bezels on all four sides of the display and latest 10th Gen Intel processors. HP followed with its Spectre x360 15-inch variant that also gets extremely slim bezels, a very exquisite looking design and the latest 10th Gen guts from Intel. The HP Elite Dragonfly G2 is the newest entrant in the business laptop lineup with a Tile Bluetooth tracker built-in.
What stood out though is the Lenovo Legion Y740S, which is one of the slimmest and lightest gaming laptops from Lenovo. It gets the newest 10th Gen Intel processors and a standard 60Hz display but there’s no graphics card inside. Instead, Lenovo has built an external GPU box called the Booststation that will offer a combination of different graphics card from Nvidia and AMD.
HP’s latest desktop PC is a Swiss-army knife for creators
Do you think the latest Mac Pro is the ultimate machine for creators? HP doesn’t and it comes at CES with the new Envy 32 AIO. It’s an All-In-One desktop PC equipped with the latest 9th Gen Intel processors, a 31.5-inch 4K display with HDR600, the latest Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics card and a powerful audio system with two speakers as well as a subwoofer. The base of the stand can also charge your smartphone wirelessly, even when your PC is switched off. It costs $1,599 and will be on sale from today.
