Seven foreign tourists died after a bus crashed through ice and sank in a frozen lake in Russia’s Siberia region on Friday, officials said.
The accident happened at Lake Baikal, a popular winter tourist destination.
According to Russian authorities:
Rescue teams later located the vehicle 18 metres underwater.
Seven bodies were recovered from inside the bus.
One tourist reportedly escaped before the vehicle submerged.
The regional emergency ministry confirmed the deaths after an underwater inspection.
Officials said:
Authorities also stated the vehicle was driving on a route not officially cleared for use.
Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest freshwater lake and attracts large numbers of winter tourists.
During winter:
Officials suspect the bus used an unsafe section of ice.
