Seven foreign tourists died after a bus crashed through ice and sank in a frozen lake in Russia’s Siberia region on Friday, officials said.

The accident happened at Lake Baikal, a popular winter tourist destination.

What Happened

According to Russian authorities:

  • A tour bus drove onto frozen lake ice
  • The ice cracked and formed a fissure about 3 metres wide
  • The bus sank into the water

Rescue teams later located the vehicle 18 metres underwater.

Seven bodies were recovered from inside the bus.

One tourist reportedly escaped before the vehicle submerged.

Official Statement

The regional emergency ministry confirmed the deaths after an underwater inspection.

Officials said:

  • The victims were foreign nationals
  • The Chinese consulate was informed
  • A criminal investigation has been launched

Authorities also stated the vehicle was driving on a route not officially cleared for use.

Background

Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest freshwater lake and attracts large numbers of winter tourists.

During winter:

  • The lake freezes completely
  • Authorities open specific monitored ice roads
  • Driving outside marked routes is prohibited

Officials suspect the bus used an unsafe section of ice.

Next Step

Investigators are examining:

  • Driver responsibility
  • Tour operator safety compliance
  • Illegal route usage

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and more information is expected.
