C.P. Radhakrishnan Takes Oath as Governor of Maharashtra

C. P. Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra on Wednesday evening. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya of the Bombay High Court. C. P. Radhakrishnan, who is the 21st governor of Maharashtra since the state’s formation in 1960, succeeds Ramesh Bais.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, other ministers, and senior officials attended the swearing-in ceremony at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan. The newly appointed governor, C. P. Radhakrishnan, was honored with a ceremonial guard of honor by the Indian Navy.
Before assuming his new role, C. P. Radhakrishnan served as the Governor of Jharkhand for nearly one and a half years and held additional charges as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry for brief periods. With over four decades of experience, he is a respected figure in Tamil Nadu politics.
Born on May 4, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, C. P. Radhakrishnan holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He began his political career as an RSS worker and became a state executive committee member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (the predecessor of the BJP) in 1974. He was appointed as secretary of the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP in 1996 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore in 1998 and re-elected in 1999.
As an MP, he served as chairman of the parliamentary standing committee for textiles, was a member of the parliamentary committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and the consultative committee for finance. He also participated in the parliamentary special committee investigating the stock exchange scam and addressed the UN General Assembly in 2004 as part of a parliamentary delegation. Additionally, he was a member of the first parliamentary delegation to Taiwan.
From 2004 to 2007, C. P. Radhakrishnan served as the Tamil Nadu BJP chief, during which he led a 19,000 km ‘Ratha Yatra’ to advocate for issues such as linking Indian rivers, eradicating terrorism, implementing a uniform civil code, combating untouchability, and addressing narcotic drugs. He also led two ‘pad-yatras’ for various causes.
In 2016, he was appointed chairman of the Coir Board in Kochi, where he served for four years, achieving record-high coir exports of ₹ 2,532 crore. From 2020 to 2022, he was the BJP’s all India in-charge for Kerala.
On February 18, 2023, C. P. Radhakrishnan was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand. In addition to his role in Jharkhand, he also held additional charges as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
