Glowy string lights, lush greenery, sparkling ornaments and colorful Christmas bows are just a few of the essentials needed to transform your home into a Winter Wonderland. For most of us, the joy of the Christmas season starts long before December 25th — we believe it kicks off as early as you begin decorating. The holiday season isn’t in full swing until the Christmas tree is decked out, the stockings are hung and shades of red and green flow through the house. We also understand that holiday decorating year after year can start to feel old, especially if you’re trying to reuse decorations from last year. To spark creativity, we’ve rounded up magical Christmas decoration ideas that you can easily recreate at home.
As you browse this list of elegant ideas, you’ll find all the inspiration you need to add cheer to each and every corner of your home — both indoors and outdoors. To name just a few: there are genius ideas for dressing your staircase, setting a gorgeous tablescape and decorating a Christmas mantel. Now that your home feels festive, it’s time to embrace your other favorite Christmas traditions: baking Christmas cookies, singing holiday songs and watching your favorite holiday movies.
DIY Trash-to-Treasure Pears
Repurpose an old lightbulb by hot gluing twine (we used sage green and metallic gold) around the entire thing. Use a small piece of twig as the stem, then fold squares of gold paper in half and cut into crescent shapes to create leaves. When you’re finished, you’ll have beautiful decor for the mantel or dining room table.
Use Popsicle Sticks to Make a Wreath
Start with a rounded foam wreath (we suggest a 12″ once). Paint about 50 small and 20 to 30 large popsicle sticks in three different shades of green before you start layering and hot gluing this adorable creation together. Finish it off with a beautiful red bow.
Craft 3D Felt Ornaments
For this project, you’ll need about two sheets of felt per ornament — and the stiffer the better. Once you’re done tracing, folding, gluing and cutting, you can add decorative strings or cord for hanging.
Create Christmas Tree Place Settings
Spruced up your tablescape with origami-inspired napkins. Start by folding a standard 20″ green napkin into the shape of Christmas tree, then decorate your creation with mini ball ornaments.
Gild a Candle Holder
It’s surprisingly simple to add gold leaf to glass, like these cylindrical candle holders — just make sure you’re starting with a clean surface. Use craft brushes to lightly cover the surface with adhesive, creating a simple pattern or keep it organic. Once the adhesive turns from milky white to clear, place a sheet of gold leaf over the area. Lightly smooth the surface with your hands, then use a soft-bristle brush in circular motions. Add as many sheets until you’re happy with your design, then allow it to dry. In a few hours, we suggest painting a smooth thin layer of sealer on top.
Elevate Your Garland
While you’re at it, add some gold leaf to actual dried leaves (or faux leaves) to elevate a place setting, decorate a mantel or add to a holiday wreath. Tip: wash your paintbrush in water immediately after painting on the adhesive.
Make Stained Wooden Tree Ornaments
First, collect your supplies: wooden miniature trees in various shapes and sizes, acrylic paint (in shades of green), paint brush, cup of water, baby wipes, mini eyes screw in hooks and ribbon. Use watered-down paint to coat the wood, using a baby wipe to wipe off any excess. Once dried, screw in the mini eye screw to the top of the tree and add a decorative hanging loop topper.
