Mumbai: Music is always bliss and in these trying times how can one deny the healing power of music. Qawwali as a genre of music has always given one that surreal feeling of connecting with the divine and in his recent song Mere Maula that Sahil Sultanpuri has penned for Marathi film ‘WhatsApp Love’ he gives his loyal fans ample scope to bask in divinity. Released in theatres in 2019 the music of the film was not released as a standalone entity back then. But the time has finally come and the song Mere Maula has turned out to be a lovely romantic anthem that shows the love and devotion of a man towards not just his better half but also the supreme being.

The first song released individually is ‘Mere Maula’, a qawwali sung beautifully by Shabab Sabri. Released on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr it has been on loop for many fans.

Sahil Sultanpuri, who is the lyricist of the song, says, “The song comes at a very important juncture in the film. When people watched the film in the theatres, they really appreciated the song. Now, I am happy even the ones who have not seen the film can watch and listen to the song. ‘Maula Mere’ has a touch of divinity. Writing such songs is a blissful experience”

Sahil’s penchant for Qawallis comes naturally as he was born and brought up in Uttar Pradesh closer to Lucknow which is famous for hosting renowned qawwals. In the past he has written for films like ‘Saat Uchakkey’ (‘Husn Waale Farebi’). He reunited with Nitin Shankar for Whatsapp Love after a long time after ‘Maai’ and a few other projects in the past.

‘WhatsApp Love’, features Raqesh Bapat and Anuja Sathe Gokhale in leading roles and directed by Hemantkumar Vitthalrao Mahale. A bilingual film shot in Marathi and Hindi.

A few months before the lockdown happened, Sahil delivered a huge hit in the form of ‘Akhiyaan Milavanga’ from the Vidyut Jammwal starrer ‘Commando 3’.

Even during the pandemic, Sahil has continued to wield his pen with pride and has some good projects which will be out later this year.
