For weeks, The viability of holding the next Tokyo 2021 Olympic fair has been seriously questioned as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit Japan and particularly its capital with greater force with a third wave. This Wednesday the British newspaper The Times has announced that the Japanese government will soon announce that the games will be definitively canceled.

According to The Times, the Japanese government under Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, has privately decided to cancel the Tokyo Olympics, agreed to open on July 23, due to the coronavirus and its objective would now be set in seek to host the Games for the next 2032, as the venues for 2024 and 2028 are covered by Paris and Los Angeles, respectively.

Tokyo was declared a state of emergency since the first days of January due to the record increase in infections due to coronavirus and despite the fact that both the Tokyo and national governments have made an effort to keep the Games standing, the pandemic has not yielded, added to the fact that several polls mark that the majority of Japanese do not agree that games are held.

In this sense, the president of the International Olympic Committee, despite the situation of the pandemic, in an interview published this Thursday by the Japanese agency Kyodo.

The Asian country, in addition, has closed its borders since the end of December, except for Japanese citizens and foreign residents, to try to prevent the spread of new variants of the virus.
