McDonald’s is working on developing packaging for its hamburgers that does not contain harmful substances.

The famous fast food chain said it plans to eliminate all PFAS (which are groups of chemical agents used in different industries) found in its food packaging after environmental advocacy groups conducted a study last year calling for the chain, and other restaurants like Burger King and Wendy’s, with a report titled “Packaging in Contamination: Are Food Chains Using PFAS on Their Packaging?”

The study also found that these harmful chemicals are also present in the paper bags used at Wendy’s. and on the Burger King Whopper burger packaging.

“We are proud to take our product stewardship journey a step further with our commitment to eliminate all added fluorinated compounds in our packaging materials for customers globally by 2025,” said McDonald’s, which, through At the moment, it has already removed the toxic substances BPA, BPS and phthalates from its packaging.

However, despite these advances, environmental advocacy groups are asking McDonald’s to accelerate its sustainability efforts next year, rather than until 2025.

“We appreciate that McDonald’s has taken this important action and heeded our call. However, four years is too long for your customers and communities to continue to be contaminated by these unnecessary chemicals, ”Mind the Store awareness campaign director Mike Schade said in a statement, according to Fox News.

“We urge McDonald’s to phase out these chemicals by 2022 and ensure that the substitutes are safe and reusable. Other major fast food chains like Burger King and Wendy’s should come together to remove PFAS from food packaging, ”added Schade.
