At least eight hospitalized as New York City bus falls off overpass

Eight people have been hospitalized after a tandem MTA bus veered off the road and plunged over an overpass in the Bronx. 

The incident took place at 11.10pm Thursday evening when the bus driver was ‘unable to navigate the roadway and/or experienced brake failure’ and went off road, the New York Police Department said to DailyMail.com. 

The ‘accordion-style’ bus veered off the roadway near University Avenue by the exit for the Deegan Expressway, causing the bus to fall onto the Cross Bronx Expressway below.

There were eight people, including the bus driver, on board and all suffered minor injuries and have been transported to area hospitals.

The FDNY shared on Friday morning that two crews arrived at the scene, with Rescue 3 securing the bus up-top while Engine 43 began treatment of civilian patients.

FDNY officials said that the bus fell ’50 feet onto the access road,’ with the eight injured suffering injuries consistent with falling such a height. 

Officials say they’re investigating the cause of the crash. City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez took to Twitter to call for an investigation on ‘what might have happened that caused the bus to go over the edge.’

‘The MTA’s goal is to have the safest transportation system in the nation, and when an incident like this occurs we take it very seriously,’ said Patrick Warren, MTA Chief Safety and Security Officer. ‘We are conducting a full investigation and will implement lessons learned in order to prevent it from happening again. We are certain this was a terrifying incident for those customers on the bus. Our hearts go out to them with hope that they can recover quickly.’ 

The bus has been secured and crews are in the process of removing it as of 12.30am Friday. Video shows them lifting it out of the road.
