Sales of Mexican avocados in the US are booming as the coronavirus pandemic progresses, forcing more and more people to cook at home.

In fact, Avocados from Mexico (AFM) broke its annual sales record, selling 2.1 billion pounds of avocados in the United States last year. The company estimates it will sell 2.3 billion pounds in 2021.

“The pandemic has divided the world into two groups, those who have done really well and those who have done badly. Fortunately, Avocados From Mexico has been in the group that has done well, ”said Álvaro Luque, CEO and president of AFM.

AFM, an alliance between Mexican avocado packers and growers and US importers, has been the main marketing arm of the fruit since 2013, which has become a staple in many US households just as it is in Mexico.

Avocado sales in the United States generally increase on Cinco de Mayo and the Super Bowl, two occasions that are American holidays, and they are not so important in Mexico.

Mexican avocados began to be marketed on a large scale in 19 US states in 1997, and since then their sales have been growing. With the closure of restaurants due to the pandemic, avocado sales fell to 40%.

Therefore, heAFM changed the marketing strategy and focused on coupons to lower consumer prices. This helped spike sales of the fruit, The Hill reported.

Currently, Mexican avocados make up 82% of all avocado sales in the United States, generating $ 6.5 billion and more than 30,000 jobs in the United States, according to an annual report published by Texas A&M University.
