Busy Philipps says eldest child Birdie, 12, is gay and uses they/them pronouns

Busy Philipps says her 12-year-old Birdie is gay and uses they/them pronouns.

The Dawson’s Creek star has been opening up about family life and spoke of Birdie’s recent decision.

Busy says her eldest child came out as gay aged 10 and is now also non binary.

The former talk show host has been speaking on her postcast Busy Phillips Is Doing Her Best.

She said she and husband, screenwriter Marc Silverstein, “knew that Birdie knew” and have thrown their support behind the youngster.

She confirmed she asked Birdie’s permission before openly discussing them on her show.

Brave Birdie came out aged ten – and their parents have been there every step of the way

“I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to,” she said.

“Bird was like, ‘I don’t give a f*** – you can talk about that I’m gay and out; you can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool with me. That’s great’.”

She added on the podcast: “Birdie told us at ten-years old and we immediately… I mean obviously, I knew that Birdie knew.

“We had conversations with close friends, very progressive friends, whose first reaction was “but is it real? Don’t you think that like, she’ll probably change her mind?’

But the actress says she is not always pronoun perfect

“I was always so blown away by that reaction, like are you f***ing kidding me? How do you not trust a kid to know who they are?”

The couple also have daughter Cricket Pearl, seven, and say the journey has been tough at times.

The parents have been praised for their support of Birdie – but admit to slipping up from time to time.

Busy says she is still learning but can use the wrong pronouns on occasion.

“I’m trying my best at that, too,” she said, having always encouraged her kids to be true to themselves.

“I said, Bird, I’ve been doing a bad job with the pronouns, because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them, and I haven’t been doing it.”
