A bad start to 2021.

The United States surpassed the 20 million confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, 24% of the total infected in the world, according to the independent count of Johns Hopkins University.

Half of these infections have been registered since last November 9, in proof of the drastic outbreak that the country in the world most affected in absolute terms is experiencing from the pandemic, which ended the year with records of deaths and hospitalizations due to the covid- 19.

At 12:45 pm on the east coast of the country, the country registered 20,007,149 confirmed cases and 346,408 deaths by covid-19, according to the count of Johns Hopkins.

This number of cases is almost double that of the second country with the most infections in the world, India, which accumulates 10,286,709 infections, according to the same source.

The fact that infections have doubled in less than two months demonstrates the complicated situation facing the country in January, after a harsh December that was the month of the year with the most killed by the pandemic.

Forecasts for the first months of 2021 are not very encouraging, especially after the arrival in the country of the British strain of the virus, of which cases have already been registered in three states: Colorado, California and Florida.

The health authorities believe that the new strain may be much more widespread than has been detected, and because it appears to be a 70% more contagious than other variants, they are very concerned about the impact it can have on hospitals that are already overwhelmed.
