Man Utd trigger Lingard contract extension ahead of January transfer window

Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Jesse Lingard’s contract, amid growing speculation regarding his future.

Lingard had just months left on his deal and would have been available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

And with the January window open set to open on Saturday, the 28-year-old would have been free to talk to teams abroad and arrange a pre-contract agreement.

However, United have now exercised the option within his contract, keeping him tied to the Red Devils until at least the summer of 2022.

Jesse Lingard has had the 12-month option in his contract triggered by Man Utd

The England international is yet to register a single appearance in either the Premier League and Champions League this season, after being linked with a move away in the close season.

It is understood his representatives held talks with a number of clubs, both in England and Europe, but a move was never agreed.

Sky Sports also claim that Lingard has held initial talks with La Liga outift Real Sociedad over a potential loan switch in the upcoming window.

Solskjaer revealed Lingard has been missing due to a number of periods of imposed self-isolation

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named the midfielder in both of his 25-man squads and admitted that his lack of involvement has been down to a number of coronavirus enforced self-isolation periods.

“He’s been unfortunate with having to isolate a few times, been in contact, or close contact with Covid, not even having it himself,” Solskjaer said last week.

“He’s been very unlucky being away from the training ground a few times.

“He works really hard and he’ll be involved in the squad, definitely, on Wednesday.”

Lingard split with super-agent Mino Raiola earlier this year

United triggered a similar clause in fellow academy graduate, Paul Pogba’s contract earlier this year.

Similarly to Lingard, Pogba’s deal will expire at the end of next season, although Mino Raiola has hinted the Frenchman will look to leave the club next year.

Lingard meanwhile split with super-agent Raiola after less than a year of working together, which added an extra complication to any imminent transfer.
