Klopp gives Thiago confirmation with only three Liverpool stars left sidelined

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Thiago Alcantara will not feature for Liverpool against West Brom this weekend.

But fit again duo Xherdan Shaqiri and James Milner are both in line to feature as Liverpool’s injury issues further clear.

Spain international Thiago finally resumed first team training this week, and is hoping to make his comeback over the festive period.

The 29 year-old has been sidelined with a knee injury suffered in the Merseyside derby back in October, following a wild challenge from Richardson, for which the Brazilian was red carded.

He suffered a series of setbacks in his bid to return to action, but having been working with club physios for a number of weeks, the ex-Bayern Munich star this week returned to first-team work.

Reds boss Klopp said on Thursday: “Thiago has made his first steps back towards team training. Not full yet.

“After a long time, we cannot rush it.”

“Other guys are closer, Shaq trained well. Milly [Milner], yesterday a full session. We have still two more training days before we make a decision.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also back in contention for this weekend, while Thiago will hope to feature at Newcastle next week.

Klopp has lost 19 players through injury or virus at different times, this season, but now sees the vast majority of his side’s issues clearing.

Only Diogo Jota – potetially sidelined until the end of January – and long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are still on the injury list.

Klopp also praised Sadio Mane, who last weekend broke a 10-game streak without a goal in the 7-0 thumping of Crystal Palace.

Klopp admitted: “We didn’t even know!

“I would have lost everything if I had to bet on how many games he hadn’t scored for.

“One of our best players in the world hasn’t scored for a while, who cares? He’s so difficult to defend – if Sadio has the ball, you need two or three on him.”
