Ian Wright names Premier League Team of the Season so far

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has named his Premier League Team of the Season so far, making a number of surprise inclusions.

Most top flight sides have now played 14 games this term, which is slightly behind where we would normally be at Christmas.

It has been a highly unpredictable season so far though, and the league table is yet to really take shape.

However, there have been some real stand out performers in the Premier League this season.

And Wright has given his team in a 4-3–3 formation, with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez donning the gloves.

The back four is comprised of James Justin from Leicester, Wolves captain Conor Coady, Everton rock Michael Keane and flying left-back Andy Robertson of Liverpool.

Meanwhile, in midfield Tottenham new boy Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg plays in the holding role while Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United and Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish are the creative outlets.

And in attack, Wright will be hoping Harry Kane and Heung-min Son can continue with their surefire connection, before giving a special shoutout to Everton target man Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“If we’re going to talk about these three [attackers], then the emergence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin has to be up there, has to be lauded,” the former striker said on Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast.

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin got a special mention from Wright

“Simply because there was a time not too long ago where people were saying he’s just not good enough for this level he’s not going to score the goals.

“I remember to saying to somebody I watch him and he does all the things a striker does; near post, far post, link the play, unbelievable in the air, he wins his own flick-ons. And when I watched him you think to yourself if he could add goals to his game, then we’re talking about elite.

“Now he’s scoring, you look at it and you think to yourself he’s the archetypal centre forward now, scores goals, scrappy in the box, he’s in there.”

The forward did not vote for any Reds players, despite winning the Premier League title last year, in the FIFA Best awards where he came third
Neither Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah made the cut

Wright also gave plenty of honourable mentions, adding: “I would be happy with that team, of course, there’s people that’s missed out.

“Jarrod Bowen, people like Bowen should get a mention, [Pablo] Fornals, Danny Ings, James Ward-Prowse, [Jannik] Vestergaard, somebody who I’d loved to have played against, but you watch him, for the size of him can play football.

“You’ve got Sadio Mane and [Mohamed] Salah and Georgino Wijnaldum who have been playing brilliantly, Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, even [Bukayo] Saka. But for me that team, those guys have really made an impression on their teams this season.”
