Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes Man Utd title declaration ahead of Leeds clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has declared his Manchester United stars can’t wait to be in a title race.

While Jose Moutinho and Frank Lampard are dampening title talk at Tottenham and Chelsea, Solskjaer insists his own stars are desperate to be challenging for Liverpool’s crown.

And as they face a tough test against Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds at Old Trafford on Sunday, Solskjaer says his stars would embrace the chance to win the club’s first Premier League title since 2013.

“We are all different aren’t we. For me, the more players want to push themselves with their talents,” said Solskjaer.

“I don’t think you can outperform your ego. You have to believe in yourself to get the best out of yourself.

Solskjaer declared: “Let’s see when we get to March”

“If you don’t believe that you can win, I don’t think you’ll win. Our players go into every game believing they can win but we are not going to get too far ahead of ourselves.

“We have to take one game at a time and improve as a team. Let’s see when we get to March.

“Round about March time, then we can start discussing where we might end up. But I feel the team and the group is moving in the right direction.”

Solskjaer and his assistants Michael Carrick and Mike Phelan have all won titles as players at Old Trafford with Phelan winning multiple times as a coach under Sir Alex Ferguson.

And they believe their experience can help the current squad if they are in a title fight.

Solskjaer said: “I am confident in myself and my staff we have experience enough. Of course Mike Phelan has worked with Sir Alex, I played under him.

“Of course Mike probably had the best seat of all learning from the gaffer.

“Then again, me and Michael have experienced it as players. We have won the league quite a few times.

United’s last game in front of their own fans came at the start of March

“Of course it is different on the staff but our job is to make sure the players focus on the next game and then if we get to March and we are in that position, we are going to enjoy it.

“And if we have fans back that would be absolutely fantastic. The last game we played at Old Trafford with fans was Man City and we won 2-0.

“We scored with the last kick and our fans can’t wait to get back in and support the team again. Hopefully, we can be up there and give them something to believe in.”

But Solskjaer has warned Leeds will be a real danger in the first League clash between the rivals since 2004.

“It is going to be an intense game in a competitive way of course,” he added. “We know it is going to be a running game because Leeds are the fittest team in the league and they are going to challenge us and push us to the edge.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my players standing up to it because you have to go toe-to-toe with Leeds physically to have a chance of getting a result and then take your opportunities.”
