EastEnders star Jessie Wallace’s company has finally been wound up, owing the taxman £40,000.
The 49-year-old actress, who plays Kat Slater in the BBC One soap, placed Thatcher Promotions Limited in voluntary liquidation in 2015.
But the company owed almost £70,000 in unpaid corporation tax and VAT, which liquidators have been trying to recoup ever since.
They hired a law firm to ensure Jessie, who is the only director of the firm, returned the money by putting a legal charge on her home.
Although she paid £60,000, much of this money had to go to cover legal fees and pay the liquidator charged with closing the business.
In the end, there was only enough money to pay out £27,000 out of the £70,000 owed in tax as the liquidators finally “fully wound up” the business in documents lodged with Companies House on Tuesday.
The liquidator’s report revealed that Jessie had agreed to pay back the loan at £1,000 a month, but had failed to make regular payments.
It read: “Instalments were agreed to repay the loan but unfortunately they were not regular and continued chasing was required.
“Therefore, to secure the debt, I instructed solicitors to place a charge upon her property.”
The liquidator’s report says HMRC could look into Thatcher Promotions Limited’s expenses further.
It says: “An unsecured creditor may with the permission of the court request further details of the office holders remuneration and expenses.
“An unsecured creditor may apply to court to challenge the officeholder’s fees and proposed expenses.”
The company was said to handle Jessie’s EastEnders’ salary. Jessie’s agent was contacted for comment.
Two years ago, another of her firms, Pentacle Alice Limited, was closed, also owing thousands to HMRC.
Jessie first joined EastEnders in 2000 as the girlfriend of Alfie Moon, played by Shane Richie. She quickly became one of the soap’s most popular characters.
Jessie and Shane left the soap in 2005 and had a five-year break before returning in the autumn of 2010 for another five years.
In 2015, they left again to appear in their own six-part BBC series, Redwater.
Jessie returned to EastEnders as Kat – this time without Alfie – in 2018.
Earlier this year, she was off work for two months after an incident while filming for EastEnders’ 35th anniversary special. Bosses reportedly made the decision to write her out of the series for two months to let her “sort herself out”.
Jessie last week paid tribute to Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, following her death, aged 83.
Jessie said: “My darling Barbara. So heartbroken to hear you have left us.”
