A 29-year-old man is said to have blackmailed dozens of teenage girls after he managed to extract sexually explicit images from them by posing as various artists popular with young people.
Mark Major was locked up by the Montreal police at the end of November. He is suspected of luring and inciting sexual touching on a dozen alleged victims between the ages of 12 and 17.
Authorities say the suspect may have claimed other casualties who have yet to come forward.
Mark Major is said to have come into contact with teenage girls on social networks or on mobile applications where he would have passed himself off as young artists known to the general public.
“He allegedly asked the young girls targeted to send him explicit photos on the pretext of having them participate in the filming of music videos. Once the images had been obtained, he allegedly tried to obtain more photos and videos of his victims by threatening them to distribute the material already in his possession, ”the SPVM said in a press release.
Mark Major would also have proposed to the young presumed victims to commit acts of a sexual nature.
The suspect would have passed himself off as singer Laurence St-Martin.
The pseudonyms used by Major included “laurence_officielstmartin” and “3145alicia”.
The Montrealer could have made victims all over the province, police believe.
The suspect appeared at the Montreal courthouse on November 26, on charges of luring a child, invitation to sexual touching, obtaining sexual services from a person under the age of 18 for consideration, extortion, identity fraud and the production and distribution of child pornography.
He remained in detention following his appearance.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have been a victim or who knows anyone who may have been a victim of Mark Major to come to their neighborhood police station or call 911 to make a formal complaint.
