Jurgen Klopp lifts lid on Gini Wijnaldum’s attitude amid transfer speculation

Jurgen Klopp praised Georginio Wijnaldum for continuing to show “top character” as transfer speculation about the Liverpool star’s future rages on.

Wijnaldum, 30, is out of contract at the end of the season and will be free to enter pre-contract talks with clubs outside of England as soon as 1 January.

The Dutchman is heavily linked with a move to Barcelona which would see him link up with former Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, who is a huge fan of the midfielder.

Often overlooked in a star-studded Liverpool team, Wijnaldum reminded potential suitors of his quality with a stunning goal in the 4-0 win over Wolves last Sunday.

Klopp has no doubts the player will continue to perform to an impeccable level despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“I have never doubted the attitude,” Klopp said ahead of his side’s trip to Fulham on Sunday. “He’s been here a long time and he’s helped us a lot in his time here. Top player, top character”

Meanwhile, Wijnaldum refused to be drawn when pressed about his future after the dominant win over Wolves.

“There was a connection from the first moment that I came here. The supporters support me a lot but like I said it’s not for me to speak about my contract right now.”

Wijnaldum moved to Anfield from Newcastle in a £25million deal in 2016 and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 20 goals.

Rarely injured and tireless in midfield, he was a key component in the Reds’ Champions League and Premier League-winning teams.
