Eddie Nketiah goal against Dundalk highlights Arsenal’s major problem

Eddie Nketiah was back amongst the goals during Arsenal’s Europa League game against Dundalk on Thursday.

With the Gunners already guaranteed top spot in Group B manager Mikel Arteta took the opportunity to rotate his squad, with a number of star names rested.

The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette were left out of the squad altogether, with a front three of Emile Smith Rowe, Nketiah and Nicolas Pepe taking their place.

But if anything, Nketiah in particular only exemplified the issues Arsenal have been having going forward so far this season – by becoming the club’s leading scorer for the season so far.

Eddie Nketiah celebrates after giving Arsenal the lead

Nketiah’s 11th minute strike was his fifth goal of the campaign, with three coming in the Europa League, one in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup.

And it moved the 21-year-old above the likes of Lacazette, Aubameyang and Pepe in the scoring charts, all of whom have netted four.

The fact that Nketiah has outshone such established stars shows the extent of the problems Arsenal have, and, with all due respect to him, you would not expect the former Leeds man to be the main source of goals at the club.

It remains to be seen if a midweek rest will spur Arsenal’s regular forwards on in the Gunners’ huge clash against Burnley on Sunday.

But if they fail to fire again surely Arteta must start considering dropping one of them to accommodate Nketiah in the line-up.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been in poor form recently

Speaking ahead of the game against Dundalk, the Spaniard issued a warning to Aubameyang that no one’s place in the side is guaranteed.

“No one is undroppable at the end of the day,” he said.

“You have to find the right players to win football matches but we cannot forget what Auba has done for this club and what he’s done in recent months – not years ago.”
